Maybe one day your team will win a championship so it can possibly have an asterisk next to it. |

How can people still be upset by this??? Their gm and staff figured out the loophole of the rules and used it to their advantage,as every team had the opportunity to do.can't call it cheating or sandbagging when it's not against the rules.call it whatever you want to call it,but the fact still remains the same...TB figured it out and won the cup. |

Sore loser.
Not a single person with a functional human brain will remember this as an "asterisk" championship. |

No asterisks on both titles. I knew it was coming and its still great every time I see it. |

But there's the problem, you still have to deal with people without a functioning human brain.

It's reported that Tampa is trying to move Johnson again this off-season, naturally. My question for the fans is: If it takes a real bite out of the younger assets and the dwindling draft capital the Lightning have left to move him, is trading Johnson still preferable than say moving Palat or Killorn for a potential (better) return?
(A lot of people say that Tampa has to "pay" in ANY deal to have another team "help them out" given their cap situation, but I don't buy it. They are good players who should be very appealing, especially to teams with cup aspirations.)
Just curious everyone's thoughts. (?) |

I think most Tampa fans have come to grips with some cap realities. Briebois kicked the can down the road as far as he could, but now the devil is due.
The grind-shutdown line of Coleman-Gourde-Goodrow is gone - evaporated into thin air for a seventh round pick. I mean, Coleman is not technically "gone" yet, but we all know it's coming.
It's also pretty obvious that one or more of Palat, Johnson, and Killorn are gone. Based on counting and fancy stats, the obvious sacrificial lamb would be Johnson. But, Johnson has the least value to other GM's.
With bridge deals to Point and Sergachev expiring on the horizon, I think ditching Johnson isn't going to be enough. Before it's over, Briesbois is probably going to jettison two of those players I mentioned and that sucks because Palat and Killorn are both important players for the Top-Six.
The Lightning are still in a win-now mindset, so burning more futures to keep more of the team together is probably the likely outcome. While a three-peat is unlikely, it's still possible, and I think the lure of that will influence Briesbois to some degree.

Maybe there's still a deal to be had with Seattle (if you can get one of those players to agree to go there, of course). I would think Palat would be especially intriguing for the Kraken, given his expiring contract and how weak they look offensively. (?) Tampa could potentially get back Blackwell as part of the deal, who'd be a great depth addition for them at only $725,000, and his contract also expires. I don't know what that deal would look like, but it crossed my mind

I think JBB will try to move Johnson and to be honest he would be a good 2 or 3 C for over half the teams in the league. I don't think JBB will give up many assets to move him as he needs all those assets going forward.
The Lightning really need Ross Colton, Alex Barre-Boulet, Mathieu Joseph, Mitchell Stephens, up and coming Boris Katchouk and Taylor Raddysh, along with Cal Foote and Ben Thomas on Defense so I don't see any of them being traded to facilitate a Johnson trade.
If no one wants to take Johnson for a low cost then JBB can move Palat or Killorn without much issue at all and actually get assets back then Johnson stays as the 3 C. Rumor was Seattle was asking other teams for 2 firsts to select either Palat or Killorn and flip them to that team. So if JBB has to move one of those two in the end they won't be giving up anything to make it happen. |

JBB could always buyout Johnson. He'd save around 4 mil next season. TJ would have a 1 mil cap charge.
Problem is he'd get a 2.8 mil cap hit the following season. Followed by 1.8. Then it's 3 years of 1.5 mil. But TB would be cap compliant next season if they re-sign their RFA's for 750k each and sign a 750k UFA goalie.
My guess is JBB will try waiving TJ again where he'll go unclaimed again. Then he'll decide if he wants to eat the warm buyout sandwich or trade 1 of Killorn or Palat. Both of them have NTC's so that won't be easy.
TJ looked really good in the playoffs. Much better than the previous season. You never know. A team in need of a C like Columbus might claim him off waivers. Unlikely but not impossible. |

That's a pretty optimistic view on moving Johnson, seeing as JBB couldn't turn the trick last off-season and even waived him twice. Everyone knows he's Tampa's least desirable contract . . . Seems pretty likely the Lightning are either tied to him or will have to add an exorbitant number of assets to move him.
Hence the nature of my original post . . . Would Tampa fans rather Johnson moved at cost to the team? or someone more valuable who potentially yields somewhat of a return??
As Galacticstone also points out, all deals may be difficult given NTC's, etc. and two players with significant contracts might need to go.

I answered your question.. I would rather keep Johnson and trade Palat or Killorn for assets then lose all the assets that are needed to trade Johnson if it were to come to that as all those assets are needed to even field a roster for next year. They cannot lose any of their young talent currently NHL ready or on the cusp. |

Thank you. That was clearer. Apologies, when I read your first response I took it as you thought Johnson had more value than history dictated and it sounded like you thought Brisebois could trade him easily. Misread your post.

Personally, if I am the GM, I would buyout Johnson and take the long term dead cap space. It's a small price to pay for two cups. Then I try to find bargains on the UFA market who will take a smaller contract to play on a contender to fill out the roster. Bring up Foote and Stephens. Make Foote work with Barb Underhill every day until he cries.
Any bargain backup goalie will suffice. Even dragging Domingue and McElBackup around didn't phase Vasi. Vasi is Brodeur and the Bolts' backup doesn't have to be good, he just has to not be a tirefire.
Then and only then, I would consider moving Killorn if I need more cap flexibility. I'd do everything I could to keep Palat. His next contract won't be a bank-breaker and I suspect he would take a discount to stay.
The thing is, Johnson is still a capable middle-six winger. But, his caphit is about 1.5m or 2m too high.

Great job by GM using LTIR for playoffs.
Fl Panthers had their number during regular season. Will be interesting to see how they manage the cap for upcoming season….. next up Vasilevsky on LTIR until playoffs. In all seriousness should be interesting to see how this plays out with starting lineup as they have done a great job with implementing young guns into the lineup with their talent

If Vasi goes on LTIR, the Bolts won't make the playoffs. They will become a lottery team.

Couldn't Johnson be bundled with Palat, Retain $1.5M on TJ and send them to say Detroit for say a 6th? Detroit needs a 2C(TJ) and Palat would be on that line as well. For $8.8M in cap hit would instanly make Detroit a better team and TB has 2 roster spots and $8.8M in space to ...do what ever BB decides to do. |
