I would love to hear back from people who understand hockey! How bad did the Rangers seriously screw up here??
First off the screw up started with Sather still having Dolans ear. They fired two guys who know more about hockey than Sather ever will! Gorton built the Stanly Cup Champs Bruins and JD helped put together the Stanly Cup Champs Blues!!! The only thing Sather has done is destroy the NYR like Tump did to America!!!! Gorton made some great deals getting us players like Mika and Fox for example and JD sure had his hand in on getting us Panarin! They were building from the top down in lines before the crying started about we were not tough enough. First off you don't build from your 4th line up you start from the 1st line down! Jeff and JD should have never been fired, I do get the Rangers were affraid of loosing Drury but they should have retired Sather moved JD to Sathers spot and Gorton to JD spot and made Drury the GM!
With regards to Jack Eichel I know most people who understand hockey knows we do not need him! We do not need a seriously injured player with a neck injury and someone who is bad in the lockerroom!!! We just got rid of a cancer and we do not need another cancer in our lockerroom!!! He is not worth the 10M cap hit for the next 5 years! We already have rock starts who can put the puck in the net we just needed to get a little tougher and harder to play against! Dylan Larkin would have been a much better player to aquire with a 6M cap hit for the next two years and would have cost us nothing compaired to what gambling on Eichel would have cost us!!!!
Trading Buch was butt f ing stupid!!! You not only pissed off your core players on your own team but you gave a guy away for nothing who has only improved through his time with the Rangers. His defense got better, his checking got better,. sticking up for players got better and he is one of our leading scoreres!!!! WTF???? They should have signed him long term to a 5.5M deal NOT trade him for a nobody and a second round pick!!!!!
With Sather back in the picture he will destroy everything Jeff and JD had done!!! Now it looks to me it will be another 40 years before we win a Stanley Cup!!!!!

I just noticed the end of that Larry brooks article about the Nemeth signing says this:
The Rangers are believed to be still searching for a veteran with size-and-strength attributes to assume the role as seventh defenseman after the club decided to move on from impending free agent Brendan Smith.

How about just bring Smith back and make him a forward that can go back to D if needed?

It makes sense, outside of Trouba and Nemeth they are a really small Defensive corp

Nemeth is a decent replacement for Brendan Smith at a proposed much lower cost$$$.
I like the thought of possibly pairing him with Nils ( if he can make the team ). A veteran countryman to help the kid settle into North America. Not a bad idea...

if somebody had signed Buch to an offer sheet anywhere under 6.1 mil a year, the compensation would have been 1 first rounder and a 3rd.
I wonder if there was a chance that the Rangers feared one was coming for Buch and preferred Blais and a 2nd rounder to a first rounder and a 3rd
or if a team would sign him to 4.1 mil a year offer sheet where it would just be a 2nd rounder as compensation - jimbro83
Your opening point proves further, (with Buch seeking a larger amount deal with term), why Drury should have received a 1st Rounder, instead of a 2nd Rounder of all things, in 2022, with a draft this past weekend he knew going in, the Rangers had no 2nd Round pick.
Had Drury feared an offer sheet coming, he would have had to match it, unless it being of ridiculously high money & term. He then would have had up to days prior to free agency of next Summer in 2022 to trade Buch, should he not be able to get fair value by next season's Trade Deadline a few months ahead.
That's why this past weekend, and overnight here in a reply, I compared Drury's value received for Buch to that Gorton did for Kevin Hayes on Trade Deadline Day in 2019; with both forwards, (though Hayes a center who earlier played wing), being age 26 & potential free agents having great seasons in their prime when dealt. Gorton, however of key among 2 pieces & a 3rd Cond. piece, received a current then 2019 1st Round Pick + age 22 then Brendan Lemieux for toughness, compared to Drury obtaining 2 pieces in that 2nd Rounder in the following 2022 season + age 25 Sam Blais for toughness, who had issues resulting him being in his former head coach Berube's doghouse.

I still think the Hagelin deal is the best comparison
2nd round pick and a marginal player, although Blais is a definite for this lineup more than Etem was

I can tell my wife the 100k car that didn't really work out is gone and I replaced it with a 60k car, which is much lower and she'll still throw a hot iron at me. lol
Nemeth seems fine, but hopefully it's not 3 years. I'm not loving Drury handing out any sort of term even if it is "lower" cost.

So they are looking for a Brendan Smith type to replace Brendan Smith. I wonder if Jack Johnson is available
