Exactly.

And as far as the poor return, how far off was it really? Were people expecting multiple firsts back or something? Maybe a little more promising of a roster player? I could have seen an upgrade on both pieces, but Drury sees Blais as a quality role player and the second is one round late.

it's like you just try and discuss what Drury's possible motives are and what the plan is going to be and you get accused of defending it, it's nuts

"ok, so what happens now" is not an endorsement of the trade

I’m so sick of hearing they did it for cap room also, they have plenty of cap space right now. Do u see Tampa just giving away guys on their roster bc they’re OVER the cap? No, they’re waiting for the right deal/opportunity to make a trade. The Buch trade has rookie mistake by Drury written all
Over it. We replaced a 1st line winger with a 2022 2nd that’s 4 years away from playing in the NHL and a 4th liner, terrible trade.

- nyrangers9479

Cap space is an asset in much the same way that a draft pick is an asset. Drury said he needed flexibility. What he hinted at was not just cap room to acquire an upgrade at 2C but, unless I'm misreading the Rangers' cap situation, they want to extend Zibanejad at around $9.5 -10 which will require space next year, and they now know that Fox's extension will be expensive (at least $9 long term), and they have to account for remaining buyouts this year and next, in addition to Shesterkin's new contract this season (around $5.per year)

I mean seriously, if the team did things that I wanted, JD, Gorton, Quinn would all still be here

Anybody thinks I endorse all of this are out of their minds

That's the thing if Zib is demanding 10 million a year for 7 years, I don't know I may walk away from that. That's a tough one

Too bad they couldn't hit for #1 this year.

Maybe that's Drury's plan?

I'd give it to him for 5 years, less AAV if he wants more term.

I just don’t get how it’s THAT much of a lop sided trade when Reinhart went for a 1st?

On what planet is Buch’s value equal to Reinhart?

Reinhart is younger than Buch and has five 20 goal seasons. Buch only has two 20 goal seasons.

And let’s be real - we all know that every single year up until last, Buch has only showed up for maybe 50% of those seasons at most. He was consistent throughout last year but it was a short season…and other teams scouting departments are factoring in his entire career tendency rather than just what he did last season.

To me, Buch for a 2nd and a quality 4th liner who make an impact like Brandon Prust did is consistent with Reinhart for a 1st.

Six month difference in age
Buch is a much more physical player than Reinhart

Agree with some of the other points and I am a huge Reinhart and Buchnevich fan

Also Buch became a really good penalty killer. Player that can play in all situations

Buch's season was so good last year that if St Louis doesn't get a long term extension done with him he will kill it in arbitration

yea his concussion history scares me a little and he has gone hot and cold at times. Not denying he is an elite goal scorer but paying someone that much he cant disappear like he does at times.

No doubt that the age difference isn’t massive, and Buch has some elements to his game such as physicality and his defensive abilities like TPC mentioned. But I still think Reinhart >> Buch in value given the pedigree of being the 2nd overall pick and scored 20 goals in 5 seasons by the age of 25.

Let’s just put it this way - zero chance Buffalo trades Reinhart 1 for 1 for Buch, and if we did pull that off, everyone on here would be talking about how much of a steal and upgrade we got over Buch.

I think the biggest thing is we found a diamond in the rough in the 3rd round. He finally figured it out last year and became a really good player. Just sucks we couldn't see how he built off of last year for the future.

But like I said upgrade at center with his cap space and I can move on quickly

I’d take the gamble to see how the start of this season goes for Zib. At $10M per already, a hot start shouldn’t really increase his next contract, it just validates it. But a slow start could bring the AAV down a little.

Yea not a bad plan

They just need to figure it out soon, cause they can't have both Zib and Eichel
