Lets say that NYR got a 1st rounder and Blais for Buch....Guaranteed almost everyone hear would be happy.
The difference between a late 1st rounder or a 2nd round pick is negligible....you know that...right? The % between the two making the NHL is almost exactly the same. - rrentz
I would have been much happier had we gotten a 1st round pick. However, the difference between picks 16 and 48 ( for example ) is more than negligible --- it can be quite substantial depending on the draft year.

IDK, I haven't done the research, but I'd imagine that out of the past 30 years the % of picks 15-31 compared to 32-45 making the NHL are pretty similar. My point is that besides the fan base's perception, there isn't too much of a difference between a mid-late first round pick and a 2nd round pick.

It's a valid point and you're probably correct that the fans would have felt much better about it. That said, there are more than 2 options. Maybe throw in our #15 pick and get something of value rather than a 4th line player and a pick with a 15% chance of making the NHL.
Blues squeaked into the playoffs and with Tarasenko wanting out could use a quick refresh. How much more than Buch and #15 should it cost to get 2 yrs of O'Reilly?

The question you have to ask the Blue is are they a better team now if they trade ROR for Buch and pieces?
