He only received a qualifying offer meaning he still is Hawk property. He can sign with the Hawks, sits out or goes to play in Europe.

Read recently both sides are far apart. Hawks probably offering about 1M. Don't know what he is asking for.

This is a bummer. He's good bottom 6 that can play top 6 I think. Reminds me of Bolland. Hope we can sign him.

Gaudette. Hagel and the Hawks were said to be far apart a week or so ago.

What's reasonable for Hagel? I wonder if it is the aav or length or both.

Barkov signed for this year. Stralman's contract expires after this year so his savings don't affect Barkov's next contract.

Right... the former!!! Or money for Reinhart...

I'm a Hagel fan but I won't think he's worth a big contract. 53 games and 9 goals hasn't earned much. I'd be comfortable at 1-2 years between $1 - $1.5 million, tops.

Thanks for the non red font response. I think I would go 2, that was tops for me. Prefer your range though. Hope he stays, need more players like him.

Thanks Boiler for the red font response.

Per Frank Seravalli:

There would definitely be interest in Kampf if he makes it to market.

I don't doubt it, but he's not the type of guy a team overpays for. I think he'll back back, but it's not a lock.

It feels like Wednesday could be a crazy day.

Every now and then I like to make sure I can reply with non-red font responses, but don't get use to it.

Back to hockey... Stan went with mostly size and guys that are hard to play against in the draft. Is that his full off-season strategy?

I would go 1.5/2M on a 3 years deal. His offense started coming around as the season wore on.

You hit the honest 13th response more often

I at least hope that's what he achieves. I hope these rookies progress & the compete level stays high. I might not like every move or just puzzled by them, but I hope I'm proved wrong.

If teams are smart, there will be. He won't cost much and he does very well in a 4C role. Contending teams will be after him.

Very high price, especially with next year’s pick thrown in. Expensive extension, but that could work itself out.

I think more highly of his skills and potential than some - top 10 Norris consideration for a couple of years there, for whatever that’s worth (something). I think Columbus was a toxic situation the past couple of years, since the sweep of Tampa - Torts (like Keenan back in the day) overstaying his sell-by date, perhaps - had to affect his play. There’s no reason for his skills to have eroded so quickly.

But Stan seemed to be bidding against himself there - thru the years, he seems to have no concept of “market” - there’s the guy he wants, and by God, he’s gonna get him.

But I think Jones the Elder will be good here.

Now: Suter and Kampf not qualified, Zadorov qualified - I hope Stan has a plan.

SB got his "marketing" degree at Notre Dame. We'll see him working at a Martin's Grocery store in South Bend soon. Just a plain brutal GM.

Rather pay him $3.0 than Zadorov, and Z is gonna get more than that. Ludicrous.

Can't coach height. How is Zad any different than all the oafs we've drafted the last three years?

agreed and a guy Bowman should have dangled out there at the deadline. Teams fall in love with bottom 6 centers for cup runs.......see Sammy Pahlsson.

In his first five years in the league Marner has better offense numbers than Kane. He did it with no Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson, oduya etc.. Now add in Kane had Toews, Hossa, Sharp etc. Etc. Etc. getting him the puck, Marner is the guy retrieving and feeding pucks to Matthews and Tavares. Add to that Marner is used on the first powerplay and first penalty killing line AND he’s on the ice if the leafs are tied, down by one or up by one. Marner because of his versatility is the key player on Toronto. Do you think if Marner played in Kane’s place during the Hawk’s heyday that he wouldn’t produce in the playoffs? Allot of Kane’s success was a well balanced lineup where he didn’t have to do everything. Marner is similar to Kane offensively except in stick handling ability and he’s miles better defensively. If he were available I’d overlook the fact he’s done poorly in the playoffs and pick him up in a heartbeat.
- paulr

I get all of that...just saying Kane is 1 of the guys, like others who are constantly the FOCUS of the opposing team in a series and Kane finds ways to produce...and even during the cup run...a majority of the time he was playing with border line top 6 players.....richards, shaw, bolland, handzus to name a few.

Just feel Marner should be a lot better.....and I don't blame 100% of the leafs issues 100% on him. As you said, they have a ton of skill upfront, but their lack of skill on the back end is wait kills them.

Im amazed their darling GM hasn't traded 1 of the big 4 to get a younger top 2 D man to help them come playoff time. They also have p-ss poor cap management....as we both agree, and many others, I do love watching the leafs roll in the regular season and then implode in dramatic fashion come playoff time.

Hawks probably want to sign him for less than his 1M qualifying offer. Maybe give him some term like 2 or 3 x 800K.

I really wish that Stan would have done exactly what AZ is doing, and gone for the big signing next year. I agree with Ogi that this was the wrong time to trade away assets. I like Jones, so I'm not upset with the money and term, and I don't mind losing Boqvist because I worry about his durability. I just think 2 firsts and a second were too much to give up at this stage of the rebuild.

Because he is horrific defensively, and if you are going to go strictly by offense, you keep Strome as your 3 C (or Borgstrom) becuase Strome's offensive upside is way higher,
- LAHawk

We've heard about Strome's offensive upside for 3 years....and well...its definitely offensive.
