Just curious if anyone works backwards? Any moneyball teams? Or is it all just one big confusion of opinions about stats and eyeballs as everybody does a little of both?

So happy Big Sam is back! It would be tremendous if he is relatively healthy and nabs that 6th spot. Still really think he can be big for the PK. This is intimidating…

The backread had lots of great posts. I think the Luca Sbisa idea for 7th defenseman could work. I don’t think that he boxes out Sam or the kids but provides the injury insurance they need with NHL experience.

Plus he can be can be converted to wing if necessary.

I have been thinking more about the depth forward needs. I think it’s the least necessary of the holes and could be addressed at the deadline before the playoffs. I still wonder about NAK’s current fit and whether they make any other trades at forward.

He takes far too many dumb penalties for my liking. It was all season long. He didn't seem to learn how to be better as time wore on. I wouldn't mind someone else in that spot.

Yes, plus he seemed checked out at times. Made many questionable decisions with the puck that resulted in fewer offensive opportunities for his linemates and generally, shot on net less. Could have been just a bad one-off season, but I was really uninspired by it.
You can't just pencil Frost into the lineup. He's only played 22 NHL games. No one has any idea if he A. Can play at the NHL level and 2. Stay healthy. He's got to compete and win a job in training camp.

So you want to see Morin out there over York?
I’m getting that feel from a lot of posters here. I don’t get it. Yeah, he’s a little bit of a feel good story from all his injuries, and he plays a little mean, but he’s a depth guy. A 7th.
Sure, toss him in there once in awhile, but it’s time York gets action, and you’ve afforded him the ability to do it on the 3rd line
York is now old enough, and I don’t understand wanting to play a fringe player over a guy who has done nothing but impress so far in his journey. A guy with a chance to be a pretty decent player one day.
Let’s pump the breaks on Morin a little. He’s a depth player, fellas. He’s a player people like, but a 7 nonetheless

Does this look like a player that can't play in the NHL to you?
I don't see why picks are that important to most... This article always jumps to mind, when people start talking about picks. https://guelphstorm.com/o...great-for-nhl-draft-picks The heart of it; "The truth is that very few players taken in the NHL draft this weekend will ever play in the NHL... ...(study) looked at the drafts between 1990 and 1999. Of the 2,600 hundred players drafted just 494 or 19% played in at least 200 contests. 63% of first round picks played but less than 25% of second round picks survived and only 12% of third rounder selections. Former NHL general manager Doug MacLean said his math over the last decade showed that only 15% of second round picks ever become impact players."
Most of our lineup is 1st rounders. Generally, any impact player is a 1st rounder. Sure, you can point to a few exceptions (like Datsyuk drafted at 171st overall). But, these are flukes - you can't build an organization on lower round draft picks.
My belief, keep your 1st round pick, try to keep the second, feel free to trade 3-7 rounders. If you look at the Hagg/Ristolainen trade - we trade a 1 and 2... We got a guaranteed player versus hopes and dreams. Take the names out of it and we got this...
100% NHL'er top four Defenseman (1st rd, 8th overall)
The problem with your analysis is that takes information from the future to judge the cost of the picks foregone but from the past to assess our return.
Risto was picked 8 years ago. His faults and skills are very well known. At this stage, where he was picked is pretty irrelevant. Use his data and you will come up with more precise results.

My primary motivation of having Morin in the lineup more regularly if healthy is that I don’t really think Sanheim is all that good on the PK and would feel unsure of sticking York on the PK. York can get top minutes in the AHL for part of the season, slot in for injuries or learn to play the right side.
The PK deficiency team wide is greater than the improvement York could make on the PP in my opinion. Fletcher added Ellis and Risto who are very good on the PP.
A lot depends on everyone’s health on the d-core and how ready they are in preseason battles for spots. I will wait and see, but I won’t immediately exclude Morin from the running on the 6th spot.
Doesn’t even seem like a risk, few things I’ve read about him seem to make him out to be quite a player. - ClaudeFather
There is risk. He'll add strength in time, not too worried about that. But he'll have to be a regular scorer to have a role and improve as a two-way player. Will also need to mature emotionally on the ice. It's all doable but it won't happen overnight and he isn't a slam dunk.

I meant more towards risk at that pick, I’d imagine most guys around there have flaws. It seemed like he had some really good upside for where he was selected.
As much as I want to think Frost can be that 3rd line center I have a hard time putting him that starting 9. He needs to have a great camp and show he is healthy.
Danult would be a solid 3 C but he will probably price himself out of that role with the Flyers.
Derek Stepan?
Tyler Bozak?
Nick Bonino?
Riley Nash?
Alex Wennberg?
Could any of these guys fill a 3rd line center role on a 1 year deal and a price the Flyers can afford? - J35Bacher
Why do we want more old players blocking young players?
Never really gave it thought until now but I'd probably trade Lindblom for the right defensemen. Would definitely have to be a player with some term. I don't really like the idea of dumping him for picks. It'd have to be a 3rd round pick and a really good prospect or a 2nd round pick+. - mochoson
Why would the Flyers trade a young two way forward with 20+ goal potential for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. The stuff I'm reading today.
