I think the Leafs are in a bit of a unique situation.
We have two LW spots open on two pretty damn good lines. The opportunity to pad your stats playing with Matthews/Marner or Tavares/Nylander doesn't come around often.
I'm hoping we can get one or two of these unqualified RFAs to sign here on the cheap with the hope of pulling a Hyman in a couple years. - Leafs43

Kuemper wouldn't survive under the pressure coming from all directions In Toronto, There's no pressure or urgency In Arizona. |

Id be content with giving him 3 off of the open market. Young, he must have been on pace for a 20 goal season (or close to it).
He ticks some big boxes that are missing from this forward group, not an easy package to come by.
Sure I'd prefer 2, that's more likely closer to what he's worth. But the leafs aren't going to be the only team after him. The extra million is worth it to fill such a glaring need - joel878
Go back and watch him absolutely truck Russell in the playoffs and then dummy Kassian on the ensuing faceoff...
He's a monster. And like I said on the Leafs he's easily a 20 goal guy...
I have a feeling Murray is licking his chops to bring him back though.. I can just see another massive overpay for him by us...

I really get your frustration - what I don't get is what we would get by jettisoning Marner. What do we replace him with that's going to be at least 70% as effective as Marner at goal creation and somehow 30% better at goal prevention? I understand the: We could upgrade ourselves throughout the lineup concept. With whom? Realistically who is available that makes sense? Bear in mind that Marner is basically - at most - $2m overpaid.
For example: Landeskog added with another $3.5m infused doesn't make us better without Marner. If that $3.5m can be used with trading out Rielly and we acquire Hamilton, we might be better.
I think it should also be mentioned that he just turned 24 years old. He is our first first team all-star since Borje Salming in the 70's. Did I like how easily he seemed to get shut down against Montreal? Of course not - but Mitch Marner is not the reason we lost to the Montreal Canadiens. There were more factors than one player. - Monkeypunk
I'm not going to bother retreading why I think Marner is grossly overpaid or why I chuckle when people downplay him being overpaid by 2M a year. I've made my case over many threads and I'm too lazy to repeat them.
Instead, I'll offer this slightly reductive take:
Landeskog + 3.5M cap space all day over Marner.
It ain't happening, but there you have it. |

The Foligno brothers have had conversations this summer about playing together, Guerin likes hard nosed character guys like Foligno, The Wild could offer more than the Leafs could offer Foligno and at the end of the day Toronto Isn't any closer to the cup than Minnesota. Reasons why Foligno will sign with Minnesota. Your welcome. |

Golden Knights owner Bill Foley on the Marc-Andre Fleury trade: "I'm disappointed that this was the outcome. I really feel terrible about it. Unfortunately, that's reality."
He added he "finally capitulated" to trading Fleury. "I said, 'OK, I understand. I get it.' " #VegasBorn
