I'm not going to bother retreading why I think Marner is grossly overpaid or why I chuckle when people downplay him being overpaid by 2M a year. I've made my case over many threads and I'm too lazy to repeat them.

Instead, I'll offer this slightly reductive take:

Landeskog + 3.5M cap space all day over Marner.

It ain't happening, but there you have it.

That's fine. We can reductively disagree about that value. I get it. I know that having $3-$4m+ to throw elsewhere in the lineup gives us options that we don't have today - including upgrades in net and on D. Some of the areas of upgrade (bottom 6), I don't see much need to spend anymore than we've been spending - maybe some toughness on the third line.

I see more of an overhaul approach. If we like the idea of . . . let's say Ritchie - Foligno - Simmonds, or something of that ilk, on the third line, then what we're really saying is: Out with Mikheyev, Kerfoot and Engvall, or at least move at least one of them down to the 4th line and out with the other two.

I mean I could see ideas like what you're spouting (not that this is a trade they'd do) like a Marner for Teravainen and Pesce or something like that fills some needs - but it creates other holes that I'm not sure we'd adequately fill.

I guess it's all academic since any move away from the core won't come until the off-season.
