Great deal

Pass on a parise though

- shvingter88

Dougie was an A+. If Jones cost Chicago 9.5M AAV + Keith + 12 overall + 2nd rd pick, then I would say Hamilton at that hit is more than fair! The guy has been the #1D on every team he has played for (tho Slavin sure started looking good this year).

Bernie tho.... What a terrible deal. Could have landed Fleury for 2.75M more, Holtby 50% retained for nothing, or Halak/Jones/Brossoit all for less AAV. But eh, at the end of the day the cap hit won't kill us and we landed the biggest fish on one of the most important days of the offseason.

Overall Fitz gets an A. Would have been an A+ had he not inked Bernier, but who really cares.

Does the DeAngelo experience sour the Rangers on Italian last names fro a few seasons?
- smellmyfinger

knowing how Italians lean they probably liked the guy, unfortunately.

the real italian last name sweepstakes is who is going to get Andrew Mangiapane though.

Bernier is better than every goalie you listed except Fleury, and maybe Halak lol. And Fleury had the Devils on his NTC so that wasnt even an option

Just a quick rundown on Bernier from the Redwings Athletic writer who was commenting on the signing. "Bernier was the wings MVP the last 2 seasons, and he was literally the only reason the Redwings won games."

Its bit of an overpay but i dont hate it at all for 2 years. Please dont retire Jonathan...

- vlongo4419

It was an overpayment. No doubt about it, but odds are we were going to overpay for any tendy out there given our recent high danger scoring chances against. I would have preferred helping the Canucks and taking Holby 50% retained for his final year, but this is fine. We got Dougie!!!!

NHL:
Smith Dougie
Graves Sevo
Seig P.K

Developing in the AHL (unless hughes goes back to USHL):
Hughes Walsh
Bahl Shak

Bernier was basically Detroit's Schneider during 2015 where he was so good that he prevented them from getting top tier picks. The guy can play and we need him. 4 mil is only a slight overpayment so he doesn't go to another team. There is nothing to dislike here.

Might be true. Personally, I have him below Fleury, Halak, Anderson, Mrazek, and maybe Holtby, who were all rehomed in the past 24 hours, and Bernier's AAV is right near the top of that group. Again, it doesn't really matter that much. We still have nearly 20M cap space after adding Dougie, with Butch and P.K. leaving another 12.75M off the books following this season. We have the money to burn, so I won't put a whole lot of energy into the backup tendy debate. Today has been a great success so far, and our D core has gotten a massive upgrade both offensively, defensively, and in the grit department with Graves and Dougie joining the club.

This is best case scenario. I never thought the Devs would be an attractive destination for Dougie. Just look at what Philly gave up for Risto, or Chicago for Jones. UFA for the win.

I figured he might go that route. Wasn't sure how the Devs would influence his decision. That is fine. Better off saving 1 year on the ELC, and we appear far less desperate for D all of the sudden!

Yeah, Quinn did two years at Michigan (one of them the year after he was drafted) and looked very NHL ready when he came into the league, hopefully the same is true of Luke.

A vezina finalist and a vezina winner don’t re-up with their teams. Pretty something.

Grubauer 6 years at $5.9 to Seattle. Makes Bernier contract look even more reasonable. Deal ends when he's 36. Could be risky later on with that term.

It does? He nearly won the vezina last year. Bernier makes just 1.7mil less, albeit less years.

I'd be more concerned with the term. His numbers were vezina worthy behind Colorado last year...not sure they look the same behind an expansion team and six years is a long time. Over the past few seasons we've seen Schneider, Lundqvist, Jones and Holtby all bought out.

Soooo he wants out of St. Louis. This is common knowledge.

True, but you lumped him in with a list of UFA names, was just clarifying he wasn't just up for grabs as a free agent or something.

Either way, I'd hard pass on a guy who has played 12 seconds the past 3 years

He’s on what’s a short list of desirable and attainable options. I’d rather have Saad honestly.

After being passed up for free by the Kraken, I wonder how desperate St Louis is to get rid of him? Maybe Butcher for Tarasenko straight up? If not, Hoffman still has my interest. Him or Tarasenko have demonstrated unreal shooting % over a very large sample size. Even if their best days are behind them, it is a department we are still lacking. Foote may be the answer, or maybe Mercer, but that remains to be seen in the NHL. One of those two RW snipers would be a welcomed addition to our PP. Hamilton and Graves are absolute cannons from the point, so lets add a high slot threat to keep them guessing.

Its fine, all reports from within are that the deal is done but theyre just hammering out the structure. Also, Bernier in his presser just said "They added Dougie, thats a big piece"
