"The Flyers currently have $8.01 million of cap space free below the ceiling. Most of it will be taken up by new contracts for restricted free agents Carter Hart and Travis Sanheim."

Most of it had BETTER NOT be taken up by Carter Hart and Travis Sanheim!

Sanheim is worth maybe $2+some change/year at the most.

Carter Hart is worth about the same.

Both of these players should be on a "prove it to me" contract.

I don't care about term, necessarily, but to spend upwards of $8m on these two players is insane.

I’d let both go to arbitration after the abysmal years they both had. No reason to overpay for either.

I agree about not overpaying, but you don’t think going to arbitration would leave a sour taste in their mouths? I’m sure they’d remember it once their contracts are up again.

Arbitrators are gonna look further back than just the most recent season. You could end up with awards that exceed the available amount of cap space available -- that would be a pickle. Then what could they do? Walk away?

Hart has had two good seasons, and one where he was arguably the worst goaltender in the NHL. Sanheim had a solid season in 2018-19, other than that he's been pretty pedestrian.

Saying York is NHL ready is is a hot take. The guy has barely played any pro hockey.

According to some they have zero leverage and value and should be paid in line with Nate Thompson

Hart would have to bring his mental coach with him to prevent him from having a nervous breakdown.

I think Thompson may be the opening night 4C. I'd be disappointed if he's that all season. I personally think Laczynski is NHL ready. He just has to be healthier than he was last season. Laczynski is an older prospect.

Zero problem with York, at 20, getting more AHL time. He held his own overall in his three NHL games last season and you could see flashes of the traits that have scouts excited about him. But he certainly didn't scream out "pencil me into the NHL starting lineup right away." If it takes two months, half a season, even a full year, so be it. Yandle is a placeholder for the time being.

In terms of young players having good camps and winning spots, who expected Twarynski or Bunnaman to win opening night roster spots two seasons ago? But they both played so well in camp that they earned it. Neither sustained it once the regular season began, but yes, there is a threshold where a young player can win a spot out of camp. Farabee only spent a couple games with the Phantoms before he came up the first time.

Now, if it's close, does AV go with the vet? Probably. But you can say that of the majority of NHL coaches. So would Lavy or Quenneville, just to name two.

- bmeltzer

If Laczynski is ready, Thompson is really a perfect 13th forward. What the team lacks is a 3C to take the pressure off of Couts and Hayes having to play so many minutes every night. It really took a toll on them last season.

And that's fine, If york isn't ready he isn't ready. Can you say right now York is ready to be an NHL regular.....? And that was the point, CHuck needed to protect against him not being ready
- bradster

Yandle wasn't brought in as protection in case York isn't ready. He was brought in to play ahead of York. Pre ordaining that York would go to the AHL.

I'm with you. What do we do? No way Thompson moves into 3C. Laughton moves back to C? Bunny or Lazynski? Is there another deal out there?

We had the same issue this past year. Over reliance on young kids stepping up. Myers, Sanheim, Patty, etc. Didn't work.

- cdearth23

First, the Flyers may try to make Frost a center, but he is a lot like Giroux, and will play his best hockey of he gets moved to wing. The Flyers don't have a 3C on the roster and after they sign Hart and Sanheim they will have about $2.5M left. Remember that two forwards that will be sent to LV are being counted towards the cap now. They need to use ~ $2M to sign a vet in this role so Laughton can go back to being a 3/4 W where he is effective.

Dunno, haven't really seen much evidence to support that assumption.

And AV was never a big fan of Yandle... and that's when he was in his prime.

But but he missed a whole season so he deserves a chance !
- ClaudeFather

Yeah crazy how people refuse to see he just doesn't have what it takes. They want to keep giving him a chance until he has negative trade value. Guy was only good because he was the oldest prospect in his age group and abused his size against kids in juniors. Can't do that in the NHL. He's done for, and I think the Flyers realized this and made the decision to upgrade on Myers for a legit 1st pair d man.

Bill posted earlier that he interviewed poorly too, which combining these red flags with everything from him just being the oldest and abusing his size against kids, and his medical history, I really am disappointed that they didn't take a shot with Makar, Petersson or Heiskanen. Just way too many red flags with him which is obvious as to why he didn't go 1st overall. Thanks Hexy

I'd have to think he is.....
This will be Sammy's big chance. I've always liked what he brings to the table. Guess we'll have to see, but I'm glad he's back.

Lol of course cause it’s not your opinion. The reasons of what I posted are all relevant. Ahl is not the same league as the nhl, weakness do not get exposed the same. But I would question why he wasn’t drafted or signed by Calgary. Do you know these reasons? Without seeing him play how could we critic?
- Peter Richards

If a player doesn't have a good hockey IQ, that will be exposed at the AHL level. Myers was on track the entire time and was raved about by both the organization and outside sources as a promising NHL prospect. There was no talk of a hockey IQ issue. NHL history is full of players who were successful and not drafted. Once a player is in the NHL, the only thing that matters is how he plays and progresses.

York is 20 years old and he's not Cale Makar. There is really no downside for him to gain more experience on the Phantoms.
- jd250

York is not going to be hurt by being sent down but the point is he is not going to have a legit shot to make the team. I disagree with that.

It has been beaten to death here whether the team had the prior information at the draft , all the pre draft shows and whatnot had him consensus #1/2, so I don’t know how much was out there. The Injuries were, just maybe not the head stuff , idk. Regardless he stunk, we don’t need another perimeter player

That’s a dumb take. I agree his medical history is an issue. But in his time when he was healthy, you could see glimpses of his elite vision and his ability to be heavy on the puck. He may never pan out because of his medical stuff, but saying he doesn’t have skill is just plain silly. I’m guessing you love to look at fancy stats and watch games 1 time every few weeks.

I think the Flyers are a solid team that will make the playoffs and even win a round, however they still lack elite talent, which I think is the one thing that pushes a good team over the top. Can Hart develop into a goalie as dominant as Vasky? Can Farabee be a top 3 scoring threat? Can Allison develop in to the next Tim Kerr? Will Foerster continue to develop into that accurate sniper the Flyers desperately need on their power play? These are questions that only time will answer.
- jd250

So we made all of these deals and gave up young players and high draft picks to be a playoff team that might win a round?

Look around the league, does every team make top prospects play a year or even half a year in the AHL before bringing them up? The answer is no.

Should have def kept the young players. Build for the future like they have been for the last 7 years. Then hopefully in 2 more they are ready to take over the league. That is def a sound plan.
