If this team falters and isn't in or competing for a playoff spot at the TDL, then certainly he'll be dealt. In almost all cases, a team that expects to progress in the playoffs and consider themselves a contender isn't trading their #1 defenseman to make themselves worse, even if there's a longer term benefit. I think it sends a terrible message to the team and to players around the league that you're not as concerned with winning now.
On one hand I could agree - because I feel that while walking away from Rielly would hurt on some levels, a more defensively sound defenseman, or a PP guy with a slap shot might add dynamics that make us better. I know he's a net positive for us as a player, but I would still like someone better at their job. I don't think that any of the kids are ready for that type of responsibility - given that their projected to be 3rd pairing D this year.
But ultimately I just think that for obvious reasons teams that think they have designs on the cup don't trade their key assets for futures. - Monkeypunk
you make good points and while I don't disagree I see it differently. We could trade him for a player now and future or futures and use the cap space to replace Rielly. Trading Rielly doesn't mean it has to be futures. It can be a younger up and coming dman that can help now and long term with some additional assets possibly, along with more cap flexibility to still improve the team

Tkachuk has one year left too. I know he's an RFA but that doesn't seem to matter any more when it comes to signing new deals for good players.
Calgary lost Gio....and Brodie a few years ago. They could use a good Dman.
I don't know what a hockey deal would look like but the main pieces of Rielly and Tkachuk are pretty close.
Calgary is a great trading partner since they're in the west too.
Rielly is from BC, close to home for him.
Tkachuk and Matthews are real friends outside of hockey. They came up in the US program together.
It's definitely some wishful thinking on my part but It doesn't NOT make sense. - underhill14
Oh I'd LOVE to see it. It would make sense but I don't know if Treliving sees it the same way we do.
Also, I am for Rielly being traded. I'd allow Sandin to move into the #1 spot with Brodie and let the chips fall. I wouldn't complain in the off season if it didn't go well.

I know he was put on leave and it was extended until August 6th, I mean they could just suspend him for this season.
The way the league is setup, I need to use a roster spot on him.. - PatC80
Trade him, he hasnt been that great. Other options available |

Problem is, we'd have to move out much more that Rielly for Tkafack...it would be Rielly, another first and then some. Plus then we would have to problem of Dubas negotiating an extension and we know it would be close to 10m per as a result.
then we'd have to trade Marner or Willie for a dman and recoup some assets.
it would be complicated
Plus we do not know how this current D group fairs in the back to normal conference. We'll be playing much better teams now. |

I would definitely go after someone like Matt Tkachuk.. maybe Calgary wants too much for him?

1st, dermy, decent prospect for Beauvillier(4x4.2m)
Kerfoot for picks
Then they have 2.2M to dip into FA and add one more 3rd liner. |

Ya, it would be complicated for sure.
But Rielly needs to be dealt with now, not next year or at the TDL when he has a lot less value than now.
I posted a line up earlier in the thread that had some other moves to get back some more Cap to fill the gap on D....and not gonna lie, I like it better especially keeping losing Rielly to UFA in mind.
If that happens it's a really bad move by Dubas. Probably his worst to date IMO. |

I agree, if they can't extend Rielly then they should trade him now. Letting him walk as a UFA is a terrible decision.. Either sign him now, or trade him.. |

You just give Rielly Kessel's money, maybe a bit more.
People point to Jones contract but Rielly doesn't PK at all. He is not an all situations guy and that cuts his pay.
Barrie got 5M...Rielly is better than Barrie obviously but people were saying Barrie was going to get 8M on the open market and were flat out wrong. Rielly is a 7x7 guy and Leafs could get him at 6.25-6.5M. |

We can pick up Cizikas for nothing and he is better👍 |

Cizikas wants to be an Islander and no he is not.
Leafs talked to him already, no dice apparently. |

They didn't give up Pearson...I'm happy. Jays have prospect capital to give up and can't waste these next two years with their lineup. |

Ouch
dodgers gave up the 21st and 43rd overall prospects for trea turner and Scherzer |
