I didnât say expenses I said depreciation. Itâs fine to get a tax benefit as machinery in a factory ages and loses value. Being able to depreciate the value of a playerâs contract is a pure tax scam that they lobbied Congress to get and is worth billions for the Billionaire owners. They generate tax losses they can transfer to their other businesses even when their teams are making money. - Canada Cup
They can't get a deduction for money they didn't spend.
If they are depreciating 90% of the purchase price of the team (say 2 billion) They have to spend that 2 billion in order to get 90% depreciation expense over 15 years (1.8 billion).
It is really only tax deferral assuming the IRS and CRA actually do their job and ensure that tax is paid on recapture when the team is sold.
The issue is that the IRS and CRA will likely look the other way when the owner sells the team and claims a capital gain rather than recapture.

you make good points and while I don't disagree I see it differently. We could trade him for a player now and future or futures and use the cap space to replace Rielly. Trading Rielly doesn't mean it has to be futures. It can be a younger up and coming dman that can help now and long term with some additional assets possibly, along with more cap flexibility to still improve the team - systemtool
Well. As much as it may surprise many - I'm not that much of an idiot!
If that type of deal were available, you certainly go for it - but I can't think of who we could trade Rielly for that saves us cap space, gets us younger and gets us more RFA years . . . It would be a team that is going for it now and has a desperate need for Rielly and also has a younger defenseman who they aren't comfortable with that we would be while still pursuing playoff success. That's a pretty unique request.

DeBrusk for Kerfoot? - PatC80
DeBrusk is already overpaid at $3.7m, but worse his base salary this year is $4.85m, so that would be his QO next year. No one is qualifying him at that. He's going to be a UFA next year.

good point, we would need to move someone else out to make him fit. Pass.. Kerfoot can stay for as long as Dubas wants him to stay

Krejci was already a UFA. They have about $1m to spend. - Monkeypunk
Trade DeBust, Moore, and whatever else they want. That's at least another 7-8 million in cap space. They can make it work.
I'm not saying Buffalo would do that, but Sweeney can shuffle some pieces around and make it happen. It 's unlikely, though, I think. But with Krejci gone, he may really kick this into high gear.
