Tarasenko at 50% retained? - Steven_Seagull

Can anyone make an argument that we are somehow better positioned to succeed in the playoffs this coming season, assuming we qualify? - fifty__missions
I think Marner and Matthews will be better and lets not forget Tavares. We have a solid goaltending pair.
We’ll miss Hyman a little bit but we didn’t seem to miss a beat when he was injured. And if he didn’t play in Toronto I’m not sure we would even know who he was. |

Am I the only one who hopes Denis Malgin cracks the lineup after a stellar year in the Swiss league? He might be the 3C that can keep up with Kerfoot. |

Experience matters. Taking bad beats in anything is the best way to learn. - Zezel
It’s a pretty simple equation. Either the best or one of the best offensive duos in the league play up to their potential and paycheque in the playoffs or we’re (frank)ed. From that, the second line beats up the opposition, the third line shuts things down and the fourth line chips in a bit.
The second line generally does its job. The third is a big unknown as is the fourth.
There’s lots of theories as to why they didn’t last year. I haven’t really heard any on here that make sense - just all out attacks. I’ve read that they were overused in the regular season (minutes were much higher than others). Maybe they need a new style of play or maybe the lines need to be split up.

Yeah, I get it. He's buriable.
Regardless, I don't see Perry as worth 1M -- especially when we have Spezza at league minimum and who has outperformed Perry.
The superlatives here are a bit out of proportion. 🤷 - mjones242
It's like 250k over league minimum.
He scored 21 points in 49 last year and added 10 points in 22 during the playoffs.
A million is pennies for that production.

35+ contract.
Not so sure they can be buried.
Will not benefit from a reduced cap hit regardless of the players location of play, termination, retired status, or a buyout.

Yeah pretty much. I think there's a lot of all-or-nothing thinking around the Leafs currently. I don't think it's outlandish to suggest if Tavares doesn't take a knee to the head, the Leafs play Vegas or Tampa. That's hockey. |

Thought that was only if they were front loaded or heavy bonus?
I will admit they change those rules so much that I can't keep up.

Actually - you may be right.
A 35+ contract does not automatically come with a penalty.
Looks like Perry does not have a signing bonus and it's not front loaded.
Not sure why it needs the special designation then... since it operates like any other contract.

I love Burkie too. But the Kessel deal was an unmitigated disaster and submarined his tenure from day 1.
His book 'Burkes Law' is great, btw - fifty__missions
Thanks for the recommendation. Duthies book had some good stories and the Joe Murphy story was a tough but good read.
I just think the organization needs a Character like Burke to offset Sleepy Shanny and Drowning Doobie. |

Just listening to Brian Burke on Overdrive. Miss that guy in Toronto.
He’s EXACTLY what we need right now. - Byfuglien Ate Me
I listened to that interview. He was slurring words and sounds like he's aged to the point of just repeating himself all day.
That being said - maybe? |

And we'll be a 2 line team once again. Need a much better 3rd ine. |

Nick Ritchie. He could give them the size and toughness to open up more room for them, on the ice. No more being rag dolled for Matthews and Marner. |

That still looks horrible.
Not sure changing the order is going to make things "look" better but:
Ritchie, Matthews, Nylander
Bunting, Tavares, Marner
Simmonds, Kerfoot, Mikheyev
Engvall, Kampf, Spezza
Brooks
I would try that first. One tough guy per line to keep the little boys from sharting in the drawers. Switch the LWs around until they click.
Defense:
Rielly, Brodie
Muzzin, ???
Sandin, Holl
Dermott, Lily
Campbell
Mrazek
If we could find a partner for Muzz and get Ritchie, I wouldn't be too depressed next season.
Then it comes down to the stars to actually play and JT not to get trucked in the first 2 minutes of game 1.
I would still trade Rielly this summer for a winger like Tkachuk and Kerfoot for a D man.
Tkachuk-type, Matthews, Nylander
Ritchie, Tavares, Marner
Bunting, Engvall, Micheyev
Simmonds, Brooks, Spezza
Muzzin, Brodie
Sandin, Kerfoot Trade-Cross checker
Dermott, Holl
Lily
Campbell
Mrazek
¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ - underhill14

He’ll still play 18 minutes. Cut Matthews’ minutes down. Put Tavares with Matthews and Nylander after a PK. Play Tavares on PP1. Once in a while sit Spezza, Ritchie, and Robertson and play Tavares with Kerfoot and Nylander during the game. |

Ritchie makes sense. He probably doesn't get more than $1.5 on a new contract. Boston tossed him overboard because he had arbitration rights and they figured that they'd lose and have to pay him more. |
