It's like 250k over league minimum.
He scored 21 points in 49 last year and added 10 points in 22 during the playoffs.
A million is pennies for that production. - Leafs43
Look, I'm just trying to point out that this deal isn't "amazing". Anyone thinking he earns much more than 1M needs to take a deep breath and release it slowly.
Decent deal but nothing spectacular. |

11 million dollar 3C?
Could we not wait another year or 2 before we make his contract look bad? - bryant
You can call it the second line if it makes you feel better.

Ritchie makes sense. He probably doesn't get more than $1.5 on a new contract. Boston tossed him overboard because he had arbitration rights and they figured that they'd lose and have to pay him more. - PrinceLH
It makes so much sense that there is virtually zero chance Dubas goes down the Ritchie road.
I'm thinking there's a trade afoot and one of Soup or Engvall goes the other way and a winger comes back this way. Perhaps Rakell with salary retained. |

I actually really liked the idea when Leafs43 pitched it re:Marner.
Spread that offence out, stacking the top 6 clearly hasn't been a deal breaker. At 10.9 million we should expect Marner to drive a line, on the 3rd line he's gonna get the easiest opposition... Play the top 3 lines closer to even.
At the very least you're gonna know real fast when the time comes to nuke the core whether Marner should be a fixture going forward or not. 🤷🏻‍♂️ |

Actually - you may be right.
A 35+ contract does not automatically come with a penalty.
Looks like Perry does not have a signing bonus and it's not front loaded.
Not sure why it needs the special designation then... since it operates like any other contract. - Nasty_Duck
35+ contracts have to be paid out in full against the cap. So if Perry or Mike Smith retire after 1 year, the team has the remaining year count against the cap.

I think if you look at what this market has been paying the grittier types, you're gonna find out real fast that Ritchie at 1.5 is a definite pipe dream.
Someone will give him double that. |

Tarasenko, Evander Kane, Guadreau, Thachuk - Archaic
Tarasenko: maybe broken? Might be able to get him for pennies on the dollar as St. Louis apparently hates him now. But they'd have to retain mightily.
Kane: 4 years left @ 7M. I don't think he's a realistic option.
Gaudreau: One year left @ 6.75 but I think it might be tough to get him to fit. Also, smallish skill guy... maybe not what this team needs?
Tkachuk: yes, please... but his QO is 9M and it would necessitate moving Mitch for him. I'd be all for that but I'm betting we'd be feeling buyer's remorse after a couple of seasons of his antics. I'm thinking he'd be Kadri 2.0. |

Maybe longer term can keep his AAV down somewhat. Hopefully, they take a long look at this player. He's in the right age group to fit in with the core.

Tkachuk is exactly what the Leafs need and flipping Marner would be a win-win. You'd actually have a bit more cap room by doing this.

I love Tkachuk. He's a goofball but he wears his heart on his sleeve and I love those Darcy Tucker types who get under your skin.
It ain't happening though. |

Who cares about the Raptors? They fall about 5th in my Toronto team love affair:
Leafs
Jays
TFC
Rock*
Wolfpack
Argos
Raptors
Oops. 6th spot.

Absolutely he is and I think with the right term that deal could mature really well.
A top six power forward at 3 million will not age poorly should he grow to cement himself there. |
