"Everybody's focusing on the player - he said he didn't want to be drafted, the Canadiens drafted him anyway," Bettman said. "There's no mechanism not to be drafted, it's not within the player's control in any circumstance to decide when he wants to be drafted."

um, isn't it the NHL that decided that there would be no such mechanism for players to choose whether or not they can be drafted, and also that allowed Mailloux to remain eligible for the draft despite what had happened? this doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

it's a first and it's a special situation, it's tricky to put a mechanisme like that, let's say McDavid didn't want to play in Edmonton, he could just opt out of the draft and sign with whoever he wants as a free agent after?

mr.peanut, big news. the kooky maintenance guy who orders the coffee took some complaints from the IT department seriously enough to change our coffee. there is "columbian" and "presidential". he made the presidential just now and it is smoother for sure. not a ton of taste but less acidic for sure.

i will keep you updated on this important turn of events.

good point, but players could still be suspended from a draft if they had some sort of misconduct that goes against the league's values...

Maybe, not sure if you'd have to include it in the CBA. It's touchy because the guys get drafted around 18 so those acts when were they were minors.

It's just sad once again that they have to put rules in place to protect GM from themselves

I don't think it's that "touchy"... a player such as Mailloux shouldn't have been eligible to this year's draft in the first place if the league is 100% against his actions, and they could decide if he can participate the year after, or 2 years later, depending on the gravity of his actions and on whether or not the player took sufficient actions to rehabilitate himself. it doesn't make sense to say "oh sure, this guy can be drafted" and then be appalled if he gets picked. it isn't a matter of protecting GMs but protecting the league as a whole from these awkward situations.

yeah, as if the apology actually changed anything... the pick wasn't rescinded or anything, it's the exact same situation as before lol

It's almost like the league actually has no problem with it but is acting upset in the moment for PR reasons. It's all hypocrisy. Gary using the "I have daughters and grand daughters" line as if in a world he didn't have female family he'd be ok with it? End of the day the kid is being used, the girl's pain is being used and it's all in service of the mighty dollar

Bingo...but they can say to anybody challenging them "look at the strong public stance we took" while truly doing nothing. The Habs did something incredibly stupid and tone deaf but the media, corporations and the league are all so fake in their outrage for purely financial reasons...it's all pretty gross

Playing hockey in the NHL is not a fundamental right.

it's not and employers are allowed to check a candidate's criminal record. But I'm sure there's nothing in place right now because this situation has never happened before at the draft.

what do you mean..? if the kid is suspended from the draft a year or two because of his actions, how is that being an "executioner over a young man's career"? I think you're dramatizing everything

Still say this reflects more on the MTL Management and ownership character than the kid, who wanted time to figure this out and find a way to (possibly) become a better persona and make reparations.

The kid has a (supposed) program in place, let him prove he is working to change and shows it. If he does, good for him.

Habs did him, and the NHL, and their fans no favours with the selection, which they obviously thought would not be an issue whatsoever.

And I am done with this whole discussion now...
