That can happen at anytime with a player already on the roster. Sure, a lot of people would say the Rangers should have known better because they knew of the pre-existing condition, but weighing the cost/benefit is the GM's job in consult with the medical staff. I'm sure they've consulted with many surgeons about this before even making an offer.

That doesn’t quite track, though. Sure, somebody could always get hurt. Zib could take a head shot and be gone. But, his being in the line up to get hurt won’t have already cost us Kravtsov, Chytil, Jones and another top prospect.
Thinking Eichel represents anything other than significant risk is wearing blinders.

Disappointed we missed out on Ritchie, especially for the contract he signed.

The problem with Eichel is that the goal is Zib+Eichel and due to the cap that just isn't possible. Asset costs and injury risks aside I simply don't want the $10M cap hit for anyone not named MacKinnon or McDavid

Weird read. A week ago he was saying if Rangers trade Schneider it’s the same old trap they always fall for, and now he’s advocating for including Kakko for Eichel. He does say the Sabres would need to retain 50% but don’t see anyway that happens.

No way I include a cost controlled Kakko that’s healthy for an injured Eichel even at 5 million a year.

And that's why you won't get him, and when he's healthy he will go out west.

I wasn’t commenting on his play. Just another former ranger on that team

What are you saying…he did a Pete Rose??
- GStone

Rose never bet to lose (i.e., he never tanked a game he bet on, always bet his team to win). This allegation, if accurate, is either betting on a loss and trying to lose, or point (goal) shaving.

Not in an apples to apples comparison, but certainly if the Rangers extend Zib and have to trade some players to shed salary, then Zib gets seriously injured (e.g., another concussion), the result is similar. Loss of assets over a risk for purposes of acquisition/retention of another asset

If you can get Eichel with a 50% retained cap hit for Kakko + Chytil + Robertson + 1st, you do it.

IF they trade Kakko, first and most importantly, the Sabres MUST retain atleast 25% on salary.

Panarin, Eichel, Goodrow
Lafreinere, Zibanejad, Kravtsov
Kreider, Chytil, Gauthier
Blais, Rooney, Reaves/Hunt

I dont like the idea of trading for Eichel but using the Salary Cap as an excuse is overblown. We are in a perfectly fine position. There is a 5-6 year window where Panarin (11), Trouba (8) and Kreider (6.5) are eating up the most Cap. Add Mika (8.5) and Fox (8.5) and we’re still fine compared to most teams. Our young guys are on ELCs for 1-3 years of that 5-6 year window… you bridge most of them for 2-3 years (the remaining years of the 5-6 window) and then boom… LaFreniere is now in Panarin’s spot because his contract is gone.. Kakko is making Kreiders money… circle of life

Emphasis on the salary cap is absolutely not overblown.

If we dont pick up Eichel, yes, were fine on the salary cap, but were easily one the worst teams down the middle in the league.

If we do pick up Eichel the salary cap becomes a major issue, and personnel decisions have to be made. Zibanejad likely becomes a casualty of it all.

Essentially Eichel, if healthy, is a younger version of Zibanejad. However hes not great on faceoffs and not much for defense. The biggest loss will come on the PK where Zib does play and Eichel usually does not. Leaving the choices down the middle to Strome (no way), Chytil (absolutely not), Goodrow (likely will be the top (PK guy) and Rooney (preferably not being 35.6% on faceoffs when short handed).

Is it Eichel or bust at this point? Not to many rumors going around about anything else. Maybe they’re willing to go into the season the way it is but are we a better team from last year? Looks like we still need to make a move to clear some room for someone.

Lafrienere Zib Kakko
Panarin Strome Kravtsov
Kreider Chytil Goodrow
Blais Rooney Reaves

I think you’re crazy. Even a healthy Eichel I’m not sure I make that deal. Kakko will turn into a 70+ pt player to go along with everything else your giving up. No way I make that deal.

At 50% retained, for a healthy Eichel, you have to make that deal. We have high hopes for Kakko, but so far Kakko is still learning and adjusting. However we know what Eichel is capable of. It allows us to keep Zibanejad for the 1-2 punch. The downside is we go from a position of strength on the right side to a position of weakness.
