Gotta love the gms here. A player plays 24 minutes a night for years. He does that for years on d and then gets traded. As many as 7 teams offer number one picks plus for him probably for the same reason that he played 24 minutes a night and the genius gms on here think they know better. Multiple coaches and multiple gms thought it made sense to play the guy 24 minutes a night, but somehow he sucks.

People - you don’t play that many minutes a night on d in this league and suck. I’m going to go with the opinion of 7 qualified NHL gms in this league over yours. Ristolainen may not be Pronger, but he can certainly play on a second pair in this league. I would agree that giving up the 2nd rounder is painful, but to say the guy can’t play reeks of ignorance.

I think ghost on a 3rd pair running a second pp is fine. He is fine, but not at 4.5 mill since he is a dumpster fire in his own end and the knee surgeries are a concern. Why did no gm pick him up when he was waived last spring?

- Joe Nardone

Those same people who you think are nuts, also have watched a player play. Ristolainen's rep is that he is also a dumpster fire in his own end. Now why are you more qualified then they are to be able to make that determination? Do you remember Andrew MacDonald? Most Flyers fans hated him as a player. Do you know how many minutes he got on his previous team? Yep, you guessed it, 24-25 minutes a game.

Anyone who thinks you should leave spots open for young players is nuts. Young players need to take spots at the nhl level. They are not given. You do not go into the season praying York is good enough to play 19 minutes a night and can run a pp unit. You go out and get insurance which is exactly what they did. He may have to start in the AHL. So what. If he plays well he will be up. If he does not then he will stay there. This is a non issue.

- Joe Nardone

Call me nuts then. You absolutely should leave spots open for young players to compete for. They didn't go out and get insurance. That's not what they did at all. They went out and got Yandle to play on the 3rd pair and on the PP. Which effectively took away a legitimate chance for York to earn a spot coming out of camp.

It’s funny seeing the same folks on here ripping players on multiple threads.. bouncing around. It’s almost as if there is an agenda after a player on their team is moved. Is there no objectivity out there.. Just cause a guy left your team does not mean he sucks…. Not every trade has a winner 9 minutes after the trade is made. It’s almost as if some who post here just started watching the game or better yet have never even seen a game in person.

Times yours

It's pretty clear you also have a bias.

Atkinson kills penalties. Jake does not. If you follow the flyers you know how valuable this is. Right or wrong they are going to the box.
- Joe Nardone

What do you think his comment that Atkinson can do a lot more alludes to?

Well yeah. You can pull up any fancy stat on top of this and it pretty much tells the same story. It plays out as you have said we’ve all watched the guy. Like I said in an earlier post who knows maybe the guy outperforms what he has shown so far in his career but there is literally nothing to support that besides hope and complete disregard of recent history by Flyers fans and Kevin Allen

Fletcher being willing to get bent over by Adam’s and overpay for him doesn’t make him a better player…

I totally agree that they overpaid. Not to mention that there is no cost control. He's a pending UFA after this season. He has all the contract leverage. He can say this is my price or I walk. Then it's one year for a 1st, 2nd and Haag. That would be a disaster.
I think we have to account for the quality of team that he played on here. It's a factor in his numbers. How much, we'll find out. As a Flyers fan, I'm hoping he can improve playing on a better team and not having to be a top pair guy.

Sure, of course that can be a factor but the flip side of that is even mediocre players tend to stand out on garbage teams like the Sabres. I watched Risto plenty last season and seasons before and I didn’t see anything that resembled that. The guy was an absolute turnstyle last season. Who knows maybe Risto puts it together for the Flyers but I would’ve never gambled a first and a second on those odds.

I've had limited viewings of Ristolainen. Other than the obvious mean streak, he never stood out to me as a player.

Gonna be ugly if he really is a turnstyle, but it's no secret that the Flyers needed to get tougher to play against in their own end!! Don't know how many goals I saw scored against them last season with guys standing in front of their net drinking a cup of coffee while scoring from 3 feet out! The hope has to be that Risto will get better matchups(not playing against the other team's top line all the time) in Philly and have a better defense partner. I like the trade for now despite the fact that it certainly looks like a bit of an overpayment, but that's subject to change.

Yeah I mean a trade that looks like garbage now can always pan out. Ristolainen doesn’t exactly have the reputation of being tough to play against in his own end. This whole “mean streak” mantra I keep seeing Flyer fans and Sabre fans speak about it is borderline hysterical. It’s almost like the people saying this believe nobody watched this guy play besides them

Maybe he pans out for you who knows stranger things have happened and that’s hockey. I would say good luck but it would be utter BS I hope he nose dives we’re in the same division. Haha. Beat this subject to death…

Well, now you're kind of comin across as a know it all. I mean, did this dude sleep with someone close to you or something. It seems like it's almost personal at this point. I can only go by when the Sabres played the Flyers the past few seasons and he played quite tough in those games, but then maybe everyone plays tougher against what was the softest Flyers team EVER. Many pundits that are well versed around the league actually like this trade for the Flyers, so I guess we shall see.

That crappy Rangers team has a better chance of ending up in last place than second place. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Oh, okay genius!! Many of the people in the know(people that actually know the game) would disagree with you, but I'll take the word of some bozo that actually roots for the swamp rats.
