what if Nylander is actually fine and the real problem is that Morgan Reilly is just like Jake Gardiner: A perfectly fine offensive defenseman being leaned on way, way too much. - BINGO!
Sign him 4x2.5 |

Ding ding.
Except Gardiner was pretty exposed in Carolina as well as an offensive defenseman with serious defensive liabilities in any situation. Right premise though. đź‘Ť |

I can't believe Dubas hasn't thought of this.

What in the flying (frank)ing revisionist history is this?
Hyman has been due a raise for years. No one with half a brain cell would expect to sign him for less than the contract he was currently on last off season. In fact, people here were talking about how he was due a raise.
Maybe Dubas should have tried to lock him up during the Covid offseason when uncertainty was high. He may well have taken a discount for the security of knowing he had a contract during such an uncertain time.
But there is no way he would have signed 2.25 x 4 last offseason. No (frank)ing way. - Leafs43
the 4 x 2.5mln I mentioned surely was in line with what most leafs fans thought he'd be getting max.
look -- i am probably the biggest hyman fan in here, and in the wedgie prediction thread for 2020-2021 i put in 3.5mln x 4y. that was on the higher side of the estimations a year ago. i am not sure there is a thread on future value of hyman's contract post 2020-2021 season, but i'm quite sure most people would be around the 2.75mln-3mln AAV side, and they definitely estimated Hyman would get less than the Dubas favorites kerfoot, johnsson etc.

The most passive claim I saw on here preseason was in the 3.5 to 4 range over 3-4 years.. As the season progressed it became 4-5 million, and most were stating they hoped that would be a hometown discount.
Either way as is usually the case, your point has zero merit whatsoever because Hyman made it clear he wanted money and TERM. He wasn't interested in 3-4 year deals. |

Me too, but I’m not optimistic.
Leafs are the Titanic, and Dubas is drunk. - Arctic_AARDVARK
I don't have the same outlook on Dubas as you do. Far as I'm concerned, only bad move he's made recently was the Folingo trade.
I'm thinking it'll be entirely up to Rielly if he stays or goes. I'm hoping he doesn't want to get overpaid insanely like so many other d-men have recently. And Rielly honestly doesn't seem like that guy. I assume he'd take a fair deal. |

you are just making this 3+million salary range up -- before last season 80% of leafs fans were constantly poopting on hyman, calling him mr stone hands.

oh hello no!! Even before last season Hymans stats would have made him at a minimum of $4.5 mil over a 4-5 year term.
I thought the Leafs were gonna get him signed for $5mil X 4 years after the expansion draft. It would have been a mistake to go 7 years at $5.5m. 7 years is way too much for a player his age(only the elite talents are exceptions. you can sign them for big money to the age of 36)

Didn’t U.S.A. not take kessel one year? Like after he just won a cup with Pittsburg and should’ve won the conn smyth?

what are you talking about?
before this season, most of the leafs fans were penceling in hyman extension at 1.75mln x 3-5 seasons. he was severely underrated by many, starting with dubas. - MaximusAurelius
I’m a Hyman fan and nobody thought he deserved a pay cut, not even Roger. Stop Max, it’s ok to have your own opinion but it’s tough to make stuff up when we’re all in here every day...

Yup. I thought he would struggle without Tavares/Matthews as a center.
Doesn't mean he would have signed for less than 2 million a year prior to the (failed) prediction of struggling.
Of course, he wasn't outside of the top 6 too long, so he wasn't given much of an opportunity to struggle, but he did play well on the third line if I remember correctly.
