No..they couldn't. He has 1 year left and will have arbitration rights. NYR probably would've had to walk away from Buch for nothing if they didn't like arbitrators ruling . So getting Blais and 2nd rounder for him was prudent thing to do...Especially considering who needs to get more ice time, and who else will have to be resigned I. The next couple if years.

The bottom line is that this team needs Kakko, Laf, and Kravstov to take the next step and become legit bonafide top 6 wingers for the rangers to take the next step in contending.

What that means is giving those guys an opportunity to succeed with top 6 ice time and line mates.

So what does that mean for Buch? Either you sign him to a 1 year deal and lose him for nothing in free agency next year, or you sign him to what he got extended for just to ultimately slot him on the third line behind the kids?

And let’s be real here - Buch has had one good year in his career thus far, which was last year. You know what other forward was inconsistent as fck and then finally put together a consistent year which resulted in a big extension? Chris Kreider, who has reverted to his inconsistent ways the immediate season after signing.

I would not be surprised one bit if Buch reverts into his inconsistent ways that he’s shown every single year in his career thus far besides the most recent shortened year.

I also think we need to see what Blais can bring. I legitimately have not paid attention to this guy playing, and anyone else on this blog that acts like they know anything about him is full of poop. Yes he’s supposed to be a “4th liner” but a quality 4th liner isn’t that easy to get. When was the last time we had a legit 4th line energy guy that added value? Prust maybe? And we all absolutely loved him.

We need to wait until after the season to determine who won this trade. Is Blais Prust 2.0? Does Buch turn into an inconsistent 3rd liner in the first year of his 6 mil a year extension? What if Laf or Kakko score 30 goals playing in Buch’s spot in his second year?
