the Jets biggest issue has been and will remain Maurice.

bottom 6 will be fine, we also don't have Thompson or Lewis anymore who although didn't make too many mistakes, had zero chance of scoring. Gustaffson, Harkins, Vessalainen all deserve there shots

i'm surprised at the attention the loss of LB is getting. he played 14 games last year, reality always has been if Helle went down we are screwed with or without LB. lets give Comrie a chance and if he fails there is Berdin, Holm or someone like Dubnyk can be signed.

- Ross77

LB had a better sv% and GAA then Hellebuyck in 2 of the 3 years he was here. If any GM actually paid attention to the Jets they would have taken a chance on the guy that he could be a full time starter.

LB also had the lighter workload and easier starts. LB is expecting his first child and want job security. The Jets are maxed to the cap and have to do what's best for the core. The Jets have the best goalie in the league and I have no problems with management giving him the workload he gets. Even the Oilers let Andy Moog go to Boston when they had Grant Fuhr winning all the Cups.

Stanley will likely never have an impact similar to Pionk. Just not the same caliber of player.

Good god am I happy to have eaten sh*t on my Pionk first impression. All hail the tiny siege engine

Good signing! Pionk has progressed very nicely and I am liking this D much better than the last 2 years.

He is young a will still get better. I like the fact he is willing to commit to the team and the city. Once again the Trouba trade turned out to be just another major steal by Chevy and is pro scouts and done in a compromised situation where Trouba wanted out.

One of those deals where I think it is fair for both sides, and am glad they could avoid arbitration. Solidifies a much improved D!

Not sure we have 4M left for Copp, more like $3.2 I believe, but that could be rectified by moving Beaulieu, and maybe only carrying 7 d-men.

If everything else fails, Copp may be dealt, but hopefully doesn't come to that, but does he want to stay in The Peg long term? Arbitrator's award could help determine Copp's future here.

Maurice thinking Wheeler can still play 22 minutes a night and his catering to a few specific players will be a major hurdle for this team to overcome.

I'm pretty sure Stanley will slot in on the 3rd pair ahead of Beaulieu and NateB will be the 7th dman but I really wonder what the acquisitions of Schmidt and Dillon mean for Heinola, what was the point in sliding his ELC if you were just going to block his path to the team by acquiring two dmen, I can understand acquiring one of these guys but not both.

Absolutely Pomo will be this teams biggest hurdle. The Mtl series was shocking to see the difference in coaching styles. Perry was a beast, and would not have been if he was playing Wheeler minutes. Ducharme knew who was on their game and who was not. He managed minutes when guys were injured, gassed, or just off their game. Tatar was a healthy scratch despite being their top scorer over the past 2 seasons. Why was PLD 3rd among forwards TOI? It made no sense if you were watching the kid play. He was a turnover machine, and took undisciplined penalties.

Stanley not getting a shift in OT despite being scoring both the Jets goals really resonates with Maurice's overall logic. He sets a lineup in his head and won't adapt. I guess acquiring Dillon and Schmidt will allow for Heinola's contract to slide again, which could be beneficial. My fear is that a trade demand is on the horizon for Heinola, as he hasn't gotten a fair shake despite being the best D for the U20's, Moose, and German Elite League. Even at the NHL level as an 18 year old he potted 5 points through 8 games, with a +3, and was sent back down. No clue what more he or Stanley can do to show Maurice they can play. I wish Wheeler was exposed rathar than Appleton, as DeMelo would have been the most likely guy taken. I'd take Heinola on his off wing over Demelo, and Appleton would have slid up and down the lineup nicely this season.

The flip side of this is that the Habs beat some very good teams on their way to the final and we lost our top center. I've seen a ton of coaching changes in the NHL and rarely do they make much of a difference. Sure there are guys like Trotz that can make a team better but they are a rare commodity to obtain. Ducharme did do a great job though.

As I said all season long....no one was beating TB with the cap " cheating" they did so in the end all those stupid deadline trades other team did would have made no difference and Chevy did well not to trade away our future.

regardless of yours or jetsnation's viewpoint everything said was a legitimate side of the jets conversation. trying to slur jetsnation with poop about how his view is somehow diminished because it is more of mainstream - mainstream hockey insiders - is unnecessary unless its the only argument you can come up with.

I agree with everything said here. The trade deadline was disappointing but a success in that nothing of value was given up. The Montreal series showed the Jets were no match against a team on a roll and were certainly not going to beat TB.

...and I am 100 % certain you are mistaken. I have stated several times on here I have absolutely nothing to do with TNSE or any part of the Jets organization past or present (not the Moose either ). I also would assume that policy dictates that any member of TSNE would not be allowed to post on chat boards.

Just because I support the culture that Chevy has tried to build here doesn't make me part of the establishment you seem to hate. Chevy has taken what he learned from helping build the once Blackhawks dynasty and then put his own fingerprints on what his beliefs are in building a winner.Anyone who has listened to his many interviews can clearly understand what those are. Most importantly he is very careful in drafting or trading for players who fit a certain mold of personality and character to create what is likely the tightest team in the NHL.

I think we have seen it as far back as Scheifele that Chevy puts personality very high on the list of traits in any player he drafts. He also grabs players who he feels will want to stay for the longer term, hence a lot of Minnesotans or UND players. Up to this draft he rarely drafts Eastern European players. I assume that in the 2021 draft of Chibrikov and Kuzmin it was a combo of talent and personality traits that decided those selections. Perfetti and Lucius fit his personality mold to a tee. So do Schmidt and Dillon. Statsny has also proven to be a great dressing room guy as well as a tremendous ambassador for the Jets.

I assume that with Maurice the Jets management feels that his blend of experience, being extremely well-liked by the players, and helping promote the culture Chevy desires, is what is keeping him here. I have also pointed out flaws I see in his system such as the need to move away from the low cycle into a more modern mid to high cycle and getting better at defending against those same cycles. The Jets did that beautifully against the Oilers and it was a sweep. Hopefully, we see more of that this season.

To be honest though, I thought Maurice was bye-bye after the Mtl sweep. This season is likely his last chance . I have not felt this good about the Jets since 2017-18. They are good enough on paper , they have the talent, the dressing room culture, the D , and the goaltending. They have a legitimate chance to win the cup !

Don't mistake enthusiasm for being part of the Jets establishment.

lets talk Copp;

my guess is his agent (overhardt) is asking for 5+ on a long term deal, knowing full well Copp is a year away from UFA status. if this is the case, trade him, i like Copp but if he wont sign a 3 year deal, move him. two teams that should want him and he should want to go to are Columbus and Detroit. Both these teams need centers ( Copp's position of choice ) Columbus just locked up Werenski ( one of Copp's best friends ) and being a Michigan kid, Detroit is the home team.

try and get a couple of of picks, maybe a 2nd and 4th or a 3rd and a prospect?

then Replace Copp by signing either Zajac or Bozak to a one year / 1.5 deal

I disagree with moving Copp. I do appreciate that Chevy has made some moves this offseason and all of them indicate that the Jets are in a “win-now” mode. I also like how this team has gotten older and that we can no longer use the we are just “so young” excuse no more. There is only so many futures we can have and I do believe that its time to think about the present.

I do believe it’s important to manage assets carefully, however in this case I am 100% okay with the Jets walking Copp to free agency. I think Copp gets an arbitration deal and this could hold well for the Jets as Copp essentially becomes our rental player we would have otherwise acquired at the trade deadline.

Just some Ultimate thoughts….

Ross. Do we really need Copp for more than 1 yr? As a very skilled and intelligent player , I think Perfetti will be able to step in to his role in a years time. Scouts said he was the best player at the Under 18 camp and will be a leader on Team Canada come December. Lucius could be ready 2 years out.

Chevy said shortly after he was hired that he would draft not only the best players he could find, but quality kids off the ice. I think, at least for the most part, that he has kept his word.

Like you say, Paul Maurice has fit into this style of drafting perfectly. Quality coach coaching quality players. Having said that, I believe the Jets need to change their defensive style for additional success, and if not, IMO this may be Paul's last kick at the cat in Jets colors.

Hopefully that doesn't happen!

Pretty well agree with your take on Andrew Cop. If you are right with your take that Copp is asking for $5 M, then I don't think the Jets will have much choice but to deal him. Cap wise he won't fit.

Now if he is asking what I think would be fair value - $3.7-$4M, then maybe the Jets and Copp can work things out. But the Jets are in a bit of a bind here - one year contract and he can walk, more than one year and the Jets are tied up cap wise in future years. A problem!

Copp to Columbus in some kind of package for Alex Texier would work for me. And I'm sure there are other options. Chevy?

Will be interesting to see how this works out with Copp, if they managed to dump Beaulieu on a team that'd free up $1.25M in cap space, with Little on LTIR ,Comrie as a cheap backup and Niku as the cheapest possible 7th dman(he actually makes $250K less then league minimum, he's cheaper then Heinola would be), Vesalainen and Harkins on Lowry's wings and a 4th line of Nash/Gus/Toninato the Jets have $4'383'688 in cap space to sign Copp, does that seem like enough? I just can't see Chevy going the whole season right up against the cap.

I keep looking at that Goodrow contract and thinking that Copp has to be asking/wanting a few hundred thousand more then Goodrow got, yes Goodrow contributed to two cups but he's never broken 30 points, Copp was on pace for 58 this year in a full 82 game season, gotta think he's at least wanting closer to $4M then $3.6M.

So hypothetically speaking if the Jets dumped Beaulieu(which I doubt they will but let's say they do), sign Copp for say $4M×5 yrs and only carry one spare forward are they going to go the year with only $383K in cap space? That doesn't seem likely but I guess it's possible, really seems like something has to give though which means Copp or someone else has to go and that someone else has to make more then the Stanley's, Niku's do for it to make a difference in the cap space situation so it'd need to be someone making $2M or more.

Also if Chevy did decide trading Copp was what he needed to do I wonder what the return would be, Copp is only one year from UFA and other GM's know Chevy wouldn't be dealing from a position of strength, he's kind of backed himself into a corner by eating up all the cap space he had by trading for Schmidt and Dillon.

Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
