I disagree with moving Copp. I do appreciate that Chevy has made some moves this offseason and all of them indicate that the Jets are in a “win-now” mode. I also like how this team has gotten older and that we can no longer use the we are just “so young” excuse no more. There is only so many futures we can have and I do believe that its time to think about the present.
I do believe it’s important to manage assets carefully, however in this case I am 100% okay with the Jets walking Copp to free agency. I think Copp gets an arbitration deal and this could hold well for the Jets as Copp essentially becomes our rental player we would have otherwise acquired at the trade deadline.
Just some Ultimate thoughts…. - TheUltimateJet
I like Copp but I wont over pay him, i think the deal has to be at least 2 years.
i'm fine either way but i give Ehlers more credit for Copp's uptick in numbers last year than i do Copp. for 1.5-2.5 for a year i think Zajak or Bozak can pretty much do the same things and that would give us a bit more wiggle room cap wise

The flip side of this is that the Habs beat some very good teams on their way to the final and we lost our top center. I've seen a ton of coaching changes in the NHL and rarely do they make much of a difference. Sure there are guys like Trotz that can make a team better but they are a rare commodity to obtain. Ducharme did do a great job though.
As I said all season long....no one was beating TB with the cap " cheating" they did so in the end all those stupid deadline trades other team did would have made no difference and Chevy did well not to trade away our future. - jetsnation
For sure, but don't forget that Druin was Mtl's top C not too long ago. Hope the kid is doing better, but Mtl did face their own adversity, and Ducharme deserves a ton of respect for getting so much out of a team I don't even think can make back into the playoffs next season. I like bringing back Stastny to help with depth, but I can't wait to see how Perfetti fits into the lineup, as he sure looks NHL ready heading into next season. 0.85ppg as an 18 year old sure shows he is ready to make another leap, and likely challenge for some top 6 minutes as the season progresses.

I would have preferred to have Copp picked up by Seattle and then have both Appleton and the difference in cap space between him and Copp.

If you are in a win-now mode, you keep Copp over Appleton! Cropp’s cap will be lifted in the offseason as it appears he will walk when he hits free agency. If you believe in Gustafson, Vesalainen, Perfetti, Harkins and Chaz seeing both Copp and Appleton is good thing as it fosters internal growth from those players. |

I would've preferred Copp traded for a dman instead of wasting picks on Schmidt and Dillon and Heinola in the top six D core. |

Absolutely Pomo will be this teams biggest hurdle. The Mtl series was shocking to see the difference in coaching styles. Perry was a beast, and would not have been if he was playing Wheeler minutes. Ducharme knew who was on their game and who was not. He managed minutes when guys were injured, gassed, or just off their game. Tatar was a healthy scratch despite being their top scorer over the past 2 seasons. Why was PLD 3rd among forwards TOI? It made no sense if you were watching the kid play. He was a turnover machine, and took undisciplined penalties.
Stanley not getting a shift in OT despite being scoring both the Jets goals really resonates with Maurice's overall logic. He sets a lineup in his head and won't adapt. I guess acquiring Dillon and Schmidt will allow for Heinola's contract to slide again, which could be beneficial. My fear is that a trade demand is on the horizon for Heinola, as he hasn't gotten a fair shake despite being the best D for the U20's, Moose, and German Elite League. Even at the NHL level as an 18 year old he potted 5 points through 8 games, with a +3, and was sent back down. No clue what more he or Stanley can do to show Maurice they can play. I wish Wheeler was exposed rathar than Appleton, as DeMelo would have been the most likely guy taken. I'd take Heinola on his off wing over Demelo, and Appleton would have slid up and down the lineup nicely this season. - bikeguy99
Heinola's ELC can't slide again, I'm pretty sure it starts this season no matter where he plays.
I'm not kidding but I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't already requested a trade. |

Fans can nitpick all they want about "would have / should have".... but the bottom line fact is that no single GM has a better pre-season than Chevy. Its not an overnight operation to replace lost D the likes of Buff, Trouba ( overrated) , and Myers, especially in small market Winnipeg, yet he got the job done in spades and remained under cap. Ves, Perfetti, Chaz , Heinola, Samberg , etc are our future but this season is about winning and likely only Ves will see much ice time, maybe Harkins to a degree. . The following yr is a different story, Stats and Copp will be out and some of these guys will be ready. Heinola remains the guy that might be in limbo here. He deserves better but at the same time will be the first call up for any injury on D.
