I don't know about MB's decision here. Tatar and Hoffman have signed very similar contracts. Hoffman is a bit more natural goal scorer but he lacks in defensive skills and doesn't put the effort in every night like Tatar does. We mustn't be expecting the left wingers to come back in their own in next season with Hoff and Drouin.

The flip side, Tatar was likely asking for more, but the market bottomed out after the first set of guys signed. Same kinda thing happened to Tifolli last year.

Also, we have seen Tatar playoff mode and I have no issue with looking for something new, even if that player is more one-dimensional., but helps the PP

Hoffman's point production doesn't cliffdive in the playoffs and he also plays the point on the powerplay which is something the habs need. I have a feeling they will try to play an umbrella style of powerplay with Petry up top, Caufield and Hoffman on each side, something Tatar couldn't really do is one time it from the top of the circle.
