Coaches always say, the NHL isn’t a development league. If you can’t crack the big team as a mid 1st rd pick after 4 years, it’s time to start looking elsewhere. Unless ur a goalie. - Arctic_AARDVARK
There are like 10 Dmen in that draft with more NHL games, and only a couple have been impact already. Dmen very rarely break into the NHl before 20. Cale Makar is from that draft, just out of his second season, and damn near won a Norris.
He's one year younger than Adam Fox, this year's Norris winner, who was a rookie, just last season (i.e. before the one that just finished). Colton Parayko was a rookie at the same age Liljegren will be in the upcoming season.
He's at the age where roughly Dmen take a step forward, and break out. Getting rid of him now would be jumping the gun. They may be getting an idea of what they have in him, but they still don't know for sure. If he doesn't take a step forward in the next year or two, then you start to know you have a fringer NHLer.

Lol.
Just watch him play. He looks really bad. Keefe doesn’t like him, Dubas made comments and is giving more love to other D prospects. The writing is on the wall.

There are under 30 players in that draft that have even played a season. And quite a few of those may not have had any games had they been Leafs prospects.
He may never turn into anything, but the only writing on the wall at this point is not about him, rather, it's about you.

I haven't been Liljegren biggest supporter despite thinking the pick was a good gamble at his rank at the time.
This does feel like an important year for him, but he's still young and has time to progress.
Poehling, who the Habs drafted at #25 that same year, is most likely becoming a regular in the NHL this year after upping his game big time in the AHL. Not every player makes the NHL in the first 3 years of their career.

This does feel like an important year for him, he needs to take a significant step to be seen as a legitimate option on the defense moving forward. - Scabeh
This is pretty much it.
I mean, in a redraft, he probably doesnt' go in much different a spot. Maybe early 2nd round. So yeah, nothing wrong with the pick.
But also yes, when prospects, even D prospects, start hitting 23 and 24, if they haven't become regular NHLers, chances start to get slim. It happens (the Leafs have one playing a key role right now), but it's significantly less likely.

hard to crack the line up when you have 5 out the 6 positions already spoken for and that 6 spot 90% assigned to someone.
those are not good odds at cracking the line up.

He's a RHD which does help his chances. I think he'll likely be (at least) a 3rd pairing guy -- it's just a matter of when.
I don’t think they’d get much for him. Certainly not a mid 1st. There’s a reason why his stock fell in the draft. Leafs were naive in thinking that they somehow know more than other teams. - Arctic_AARDVARK
