By some of the reactions here we let a top 4 D go for nothing.

I’m really not sure why it’s considered no big deal to lose a guy you spend 4-5 years developing?

I’d have gladly traded a third rounder to Seattle to have them take someone inconsequential

we've beaten this to death...and then some...and then some more...and just when it was thought to be beaten down to it's atomic structure, we beat it some more

But Risto sux
- Powerslave

We all saw the value of RHDs vs literally everything else, and the cost was bananas.

Who were the teams with better first round picks? Anaheim, Seattle, LA, Columbus (2), NJ, Detroit, Vancouver (Arizona), Ottawa, Calgary

I don't see a top 8 pick being used on Risto. Gonna use that as an arbitrary line. Vancouver wanted to cut celery, so they dealt with Arizona to do so. Arizona has no need for Risto and was in the business of collecting picks, not selling them. Leaves Ottawa, Calgary, Columbus.

Columbus is rebuilding, don't see a reason to do that. Not sure I see Ottawa in a position to deal their first for Risto.

Think that leaves Calgary. They have their top 2 RHD as Andersson and Tanev. Not sure I see a fit. Flyers still make the most sense, and was clearly the highest 1st rounder provided, plus they were able to send a warm body and a 2nd in return.

what if a third wasn't good enough? you'd give up a second for an expandable guy? Someone that comes a dime a dozen

I don't usually weigh in on the Risto convo. And no matter how you view him, it is still a bit of a shock that seven (!) teams offered that.

I'm in the same boat. It's not like still wanting Borgen should be a shame mark some of us have to wear. I'd rather have him on the right over Sardarian (Fla 3rd) and Girgensons for example.

We have no idea.

I just find the sarcastic comments on Borgen amusing as if we’re supposed to be thrilled we lost a guy a lot of people had high hopes for

Every deal Seattle wanted to make was "astronomical". A 3rd doesn't sound astronomical to me. What if it was a 2nd? Two 2nds? A 1st?

What if you just go sign Mark Pysyk. What if you have Mattias Samuelsson who can play a very similar game.

Make Vegas include Zach Whitecloud in a trade for Jack. Go sign Josh Brown in UFA next year.

It's sad we lost an asset for nothing, it's also mostly inconsequential.

I'm a Flyers fan. You guys wouldn't mind Hagg but you should still trade him before the season starts.

The price for Risto was also fair IMO. I don't mind giving up that match for a top 4 RHD especially when he can slide up to replace Ellis when he inevitably is out for ~10 games. Myers was the only NHL caliber RHD prospect we accrued over our 7-8 year "rebuild" and we didn't even draft him.

We tried two summers ago acquiring Niskanen and Braun. The success from that was short lived. I'm okay with what they did this summer to fill those two RHD slots in the top 4. Be it giving an extra asset in a trade or overpaying in FA, it had to be done; glad we chose the former.

All true points. I have a soft spot for Borgen (haven't tried to hide it). Watched a couple games of his when he played in Sioux Falls (both for the Power, a local high school prep team, and a few games for St. Cloud in the NCAA). Always liked St. Cloud (insert Roma telling me to get a jersey). Could be a middle pairing defenseman. Every team loses someone like that (Well not everyone, there were some questionable picks.. Why couldn't we have been one). End Will Borgen

Hagg won't be traded, and if he is, it'll be at the TDL. Sabres are thin on veteran D. I am curious to see how he performs under Granato. It'll really depend on the development of Bryson and Samuelsson. I'm gonna guess they'll want Hagg playing defensive minutes and PK. Because no one else on the left side can really do that.
