- they need to be able to compete these next few years and not waste McDavid.

- the playoffs showed Nurse's value to Edmonton as the playoffs suit his game better than the regular season but also their last game that went triple OT, he played over 60 mins when other defenders were in single digits. They simply don't have the horses to let him go

- they got burned letting Petry go. (Petry, whose contract today looks pretty nice) Not sure how the optics would look if they let their only home grown defender go

Is the contract pretty? No. Still an argument could be made that it's better than the following contracts on Edmonton alone:

Hyman
Kassian
Koskinen
