Botterill was way better at assessing D talent than forward talent. His hit rate on defensemen both pro and minor was better. It's easy to look at his defensive acquisitions and say "that's a Botterill defenseman"

He recognized the value of puck movers and stuck to what he knows well. Up front he never really nailed down a type. It was scattershot and often nonsensical

The guy was always playing checkers. Then you hire a guy like Housley and build a roster to fit his style, and totally 180 with Ralph and wonder why it failed. That and yeah Ralph is just an awful coach for the year of our lord 2021. Should have been the Devils' assistant in 2002.

It's also a side effect of constantly changing GMs. GM gets fired and the new GM has no attachment or stake in player X

I really think Botterill was hoodwinked by Ralph. Krueger told everyone who would listen that he wanted to play an uptempo style of hockey and then he went out there and did the opposite.

I'm guessing by December 2019 JB knew he made a poor decision

Didn't know Mascherin signed in Sweden, that Kulikov trade actually wasn't bad. We sold Pysyk for 4 years, had to stomach Kulikov for a while, but nabbed Asplund out of it and their guy busted out. Linus Nassen for top pair or we might've actually won a gd trade!

one of the big reasons for the trade was the switch with florida to go up and get asplund...baller brings up kulikov's freak injury that year...don't forget jack got injured that same year and missed the first 20 games or so

Mascherin was another of FL’s many poor draft picks, seemed like he wouldn’t sign because he didn’t see an easy (or guaranteed) path to the NHL roster. (But maybe it’s the Panthers’ fault, they bungled the development of many draft picks over the years.) Re-entered the draft instead and wasn’t picked until the fourth round, now it seems (to my biased eye) he is bailing out again instead of fighting for a roster spot in Dallas. He’s a Legend in his own mind.

He will most likely play the majority of the games this season and if he plays well he might get offers to be a top 6 D-man on a different team next year.
