The Sabres would be taking Tarasenko back in your scenario and then trading him while retaining 50% as not many other teams have the cap space to take Tarasenko's full contract.

Also, I agree that Monahan would likely not want to come to Buffalo, but he is from Brampton which is only 90 minutes from Buffalo.
