the simple fact is that there is so much to afghanistan dating back to the soviets, the UK (durham line) and well, well before that going back thousands of years...they don't take kindly to foreigners on their land and have more will to defend their beliefs than any layman in the U.S. could hope to understand - Michael Pachla
Seriously though, this. England invaded Afghanistan to export opium to China to get them addicted to it, to try and make them easier to conquer. Even before that, it was one of the most land-locked locations in the Old World and constantly being invaded.
But I meant Stripes couple of warnings to end the political discussion |

So much this.
Since we are being civil, basically no recent administration wanted to keep troops there, but none of them had a good plan to back up and leave the country set up for success.
It is just a big mess with several different administrations to blame, Democrats and Republicans alike. - Stripes77
You’re right. 20 years to build a credible and capable government but that was never a goal. Instead, use the country to advance broad security goals and leave a shell government and military in place and leave big parts of the population with a taste of western life. Most of the military hasn’t been paid in six months and people are surprised that the Taliban advanced as quickly as it did. |

Good discussions and opposing view points are good disagreements.
It's the personal stuff that drives me nuts

No Westerner will ever truly understand Islamic Tribal loyalties. The Taliban, and Islamic State in general, operates on a system of loyalty. They did not go in and slaughter like we are led to believe. They went in and assured loyalty to the new regime.
Edit: They will massacre the WESTERNIZED people who are left there. But Islamic State was a unification of the tribes. And still is. |

Technically it was never declared. It's a conflict with an armistice. |

These sentences make no sense. IS and the Taliban are two entirely separate entities. One being Afghan; one being Syrian. They don't get along and never have. |

More like a Civil War that the United States and Russia (well they tried to) moved in on because it was a buffer war for them to fight in to avoid a full-scale conflict during the Cold War. The only reason the South was able to hold the line (love isn't always on time) was because Russia and China couldn't intervene militarily.
We bombed 95% of the North Korean landmass. There were more bombs dropped on Korea (650,000 tons) than both Atomic Bombs and all the other bombs combined that were dropped on Japan during WWII (160,000 tons).
We obliterated North Korea. I believe they call it "bombing them into the Stone Age". And it's true - and a huge part of the ongoing problems with N. Korea. We have not actively tried to remedy the situation - At least attempts have been made with Cuba. |

Like I said, Westerners do not truly understand Islam. I'm using the wrong terminology, and more mean to emphasize the ideology behind all three of the Taliban, the Islamic State and al-Qaeda - they are but three groups struggling for the same control of all of Islam under one unification of all the Islamic Tribes under the premise that Western Culture is a threat to Islam as a whole.
Islamic State was, in fact, founded by Taliban deserters. |

Well, that's wrong.
The Chinese had 5 times the troops in Korea that the North Koreans did, and ~4 times the number of Americans, and indeed more than all UN troops combined including the South Koreans.

It had nothing to do with the size of their military, and everything to do with Russia/The Soviet Union boycotting the United Nations because they wouldn't recognize mainland People's Republic of China as the rightful Chinese Government, instead recognizing Taiwan (Republic of China) as the proper Chinese government at the time. The United Nations wouldn't let China/Soviet Russia intervene militarily.
Edit: Okay memory is a little foggy, China did actually aide N. Korea with their Military eventually - Mainland China did. Man that whole thing with China and Taiwan is sure confusing lol |

A People's History? Believe me, it doesn't suck. Your inability to accept what you learn within the pages of the book however, I cannot be held responsible for. |

I have to say too, I meant at the beginning of the conflict, only the UN invaded to defend South Korea - and that was 90% U.S. Troops, and Mainland China only got involved once they feared a U.S. invasion of China, and rightfully so because General MacArthur was a mad man who wanted to use Nuclear Weapons and likely sought to invade China after the Korean conflict had ended. |

You got it on Amazon Prime, I take it? 14 bucks is a steal for any book these days. But it's an eye-opening read. His style of writing is captivating - it's not academic and boring like a lot of texts on History are.

Nice. I've actually been ordering a lot from there lately - The Future of the Future by John McHale, American Negro Slave Revolts by Herbert Aptheker, Elementary Japanese Volume One by Yoko Hasegawa... Weber's Horseradish Mustard and a Jet Jaguar t-shirt lol. I took the free trial and forgot to cancel but honestly, 12.99/month more than makes up for the quick shipping and costs of shipping, so long as you're actively ordering. I doubt I'll keep it long-term but another month or two won't hurt. |

I need to brush through it again, but for anyone wanting an in depth look at American Military history, you should pick up For the Common Defense: A Military History of the United States of America by Allan R. Millett & Peter Maslowski. It's a little dry and long-winded, and it is quite Conservative, but it's as neutral as any documentation of our Imperialist History can probably be, in all honesty. I might have to pick up a new edition myself here sometime soon. |
