I would say
A) the probability of Sam getting hurt is rather significantly less than the possibility.
B) the probability of getting a better return at the TDL is rather significantly greater than the possibility.
When those two changes are factored in, it makes the move at the TDL a better move...although there is risk of injury, but it is low.

Furthermore, as soon as the 2021 draft choices were removed from contention...the urgency was also removed.

In summary, it is more likely he could have had a better return at the TDL.

It is impossible to know for certain if the return would be greater at the deadline. The trade of Reinhart now removed that possibility.

Reinhart also went on a shooting bender at the end of the year, odds are he doesn’t shoot 20% again this year.

Removing Sam Reinhart now also increases the possibility of Shane Wright.

I’d rather give myself the best chance of securing the top lotto odds then win a few extra games and get an extra 2nd rounder at the deadline that has low odds of cracking our roster full time in the first place.

With Buffalo’s luck, Sam shoots 5% like Hall did it gets hurt for all we know. What was the possibility of Eichel getting a neck injury last year ?

Good news for us and bad news for you is if you are correct, we can just LTIR him and can say go ahead with your surgery. You won’t play a regular season shift but gear up for the Olympics. Then if he comes back full form, he’ll be worth quite a bit more than that. Rangers fans like you seem to forget he’s not UFA. Sabres getting clowned on but just maybe my plan makes a bit of sense and keeps him far the (frank) away from you guys. No offense personally but some of your Rangers fans are equally as bad as the ones of ours you think are unreasonable. He’s not yours lol, he’s ours.
