Or just not bending over to the whims of those currently running and worsening the sport
- FlyerFan3260

Kinda ironic since we all follow a team that was widely accused of ruining the sport during the Bullies days. Our dear departed owner was also a central figure in multiple lockouts, hasty expansion in the 90's, rubberstamped the relocation of multiple storied franchises, and was personally responsible for a lot of the spending that drove salaries up.

But ads on jerseys is somehow the canary in the coal mine?

The arduous defense of ads on a jersey is one that you can own as far as I’m concerned.

Nobody is painting the past as some naive image of perfection, but there definitely were aspects about the game that were better. Less ads being one.

The rationale for it is there, doesn’t make it something folks need to blindly accept.

Ok, now I’m curious, what are you going to do about it?

Hah. Most people can’t really.

The last few years I tend to end up watching games with a book in my hand at the same time, or doing some other things around the home.

They're hideous.

Other ad revenue ideas:
1. make the goal song a product jingle
2. tighten the weave on the goal nets and screen an ad on them
3. PECO penalty kill!!!!
4. put ads on the stairs leading up the arena to the seats
5. extend the between periods time to 20 minutes and stuff 3-6 more commercials in there

Yeah. Will the jersey cost more with an ad on it? How would that impact fan jersey sales if they had an ad? I can’t see myself buying a jersey with a McDonald’s or Dunkin ad on it.
- Minnyhock

My brain doesn't even get that far. It's just the principle behind it. My senses are already overloaded enough with ads on the ice, boards and during commercials.

I cant possibly "consume" more than I already do. So, I quit. Very simple.

speaking of ads - why are the ads I see on this site in Spanish?

There is actually a concept, forget the name sadly.

In older times where humans had to be more aware of danger. Our senses or ability to interact with what’s around us was more in tune. A bang in the distance might mean a predator for example.

These days it’s very much the opposite. We are so overloaded that we need to practice sensory depression (not sure that’s the right word).

Need to practice tuning things out. Or ignoring visual stimuli.

Remember this phrase....

"Overstimulated and overfed"

Looking back through most of history, humans had to spend a great deal of their time just finding food. Tons and tons of energy went into finding suitable calories. The average human doesn't exert a fraction of the energy they need to eat compared to even 150-200 years ago.

The same can be said with information. If you were even literate you were lucky to read a few books in your lifetime. You can read more in an hour today on the internet than most people could spend their reading in a library.

We have more calories and information than we know what to do with.

I'm not defending ads on jerseys. I'm just saying that it's a change that I'm not scared of, one that was totally expected. Some things get better, some things get worse. The world keeps turning, the game evolves.

Go back to any period in (hockey) history, any change that ever happened, and you can bet there were some old dudes wringing their hands over it, acting like everything was going to hell in a hand basket.

I’d say the more disturbing bit is governments or activist groups realizing just how weaponized social media can be.

The calories one is interesting in the sense that we are now looking for foods with less calories, where in the last a BigMac would be a god send to someone in wartime.

Something like playing hockey would be a waste of time, but now increasingly seen by some as a way to create family wealth, and status.

I’m not scared of it in the sense that I can tune out any time I choose to.

Thing is there is a component there with opening the floodgates. In one season we went to helmets having ads. To now on jerseys.

The logical progression will dictate further and further exploration of the same.

I’m not super inclined to watch some bastardized sport that’s just a bunch of moving billboards. No, things aren’t there yet but small steps have future implications just the same. It should have never been allowed, because now the cat is out of the bag.

Personally, my viewing experience has not improved with more and more ads integrated into the on ice play, and for a league that’s so desperate to grow its fanbase, you’d think focus on the actual product would be more important.

Dude, the flood gates were open well before jerseys and helmets. It's not like we were ever in some East German ad-free utopia and suddenly they slapped ads on the jerseys. Jerseys and helmets were basically the last things in the arena NOT to have a brand or ad emblazoned on them. Now they just look like everything else.

Rest assured that eventually some AI filter will come out that will remove all the offending ads from your screen, like my ad block does for this site.

I don’t disagree with the facts of current reality, but the notion for people to just say whatever is what allows the product to be worsened.

Is your experience better with electronic ads on the glass? More ads along the boards squished in, and every single comment “brought to you by”

If you’re able to tune that stuff out completely, congrats I guess. They don’t need the money to go to some of the lengths they have, sweaters being one.

The cap kept going up season, after season for years. Lockouts which were supposed to at least help prevent unsubstantiated growth of said cap.

They find themselves in a bubble ready to burst you say?

It’s of their own doing, and no they don’t need the money. It’s greed, and don’t lecture me that it’s something more. Many Americans took a step back in this pandemic financially, and have learned to adjust accordingly.

The modern NHL, and current ownership is just showing they care more about profitability than respecting the sport they represent. As I said, sign of the times. Doesn’t mean it’s for the better.

- FlyerFan3260

Lockouts were not about preventing unsubstantiated growth of the cap. The NHL is in desperate need of more revenue, especially since what happened during the pandemic. NHL and current ownership is in it for the business. To make a profit. Your view is really puzzling.

It's just more visual white noise to me. Blends in with all the crap on the boards, the crowd, etc. I don't notice the helmet ads at all unless it's a logo I don't recognize, then I'm curious. I expect jersey ads to be the same.

TV commercial breaks or the between whistles sponsored "entertainment" at the arena are way more jarring and triggering to me. But those things have been around forever.

My view is simply one of a fan. I understand ownership, is definitely more concerned about maximizing profits.

I’d counter that current levels of advertising negatively effect the viewing experience. If they don’t for you, I’m impressed.

I think when something changes, eventually it won't stand out and just will become part of it. Ads on jersey may seem hideous and sacrilege at first but eventually we'll just get used to it.

There is an old science experiment about a frog in boiling water.

End of the day, I’m surprised it’s gone on this long but at least something different than page after page of Flyers suck/No they don’t.

They can participate once in their collegiate career, so long as it does not overlap with a scholastic semester. You are correct that they have to pay all of their own expenses beyond the first 48 hours.
