In the end, I think it was that era of Lindy Ruff. Lindy is a much more kind and gentle man than he was back then. Whereas Lindy got the best out of Thomas Vanek he very rarely got the best out of Max . Max was the most exciting and frustrating player at the same time I've ever watched. He was so exciting that many of us simply ignored the liability he was. At the same time, a lot of people hated him.

It definitely led to some bickering here, but nothing like the way people are to each other now.

Edit: I think a lot of it had to do with how bad wgr destroyed Max on a daily basis. Paul Hamilton really hated him

There’s still some nuggets of hope with him. I think his incredibly bad results are a mixture of being attached to Sobotka’s hip in St. Louis and first year here, then Krueger, then finally with Granato and decent linemates he put up ok results
