I like ripping on Flames players more than most, but holy jump(frank) hell…

Monahan has easily been one of, if not THEE most consistent scorer of his draft class. He’s certainly been THEE most consistent scorer for the Flames since he cracked the roster in 2013. And despite all that, you’re gonna poop on him for having a down year whilst playing for two VASTLY different coaches, AND a hip injury that required corrective surgery?

- Wildschwein

LOL.. I think some fans want more than a player who pumps up his stats during the regular season, then can't keep up in the playoffs. He might not be the type of player Sutter prefers for his system.
At this point of the off season, it looks like he's staying, and we'll see what he's got, and see if he can adjust his game to Sutter and to the playoffs

I wonder what Columbus' ask is for Sillinger.. but that's a problem created entirely by Sutter having to win every last game. If we get eliminated from qualifying for the playoffs, Treliving and King's replacement should reign in Sutter and force him to tank.

Calgary kind of got very lucky having a playmaking winger that drives play in Johnny and a oppurtunist goal scoring center in Monahan. Very rare to find two players that work together that well.

Monahans only real "problem" is both he and Johnny are more elite second liners than all purpose 2 way top line threats that can play in any situation.

True "elite" first line centers are rare. You draft them typically and that's it.

But Calgary would have been well served even getting Danault.

- Aerchon

Danault got term and 5.5! How would that have worked in Calgary?
100% we could use a true #1 C but with Lindy, Mony and Backs our C position is in much better shape than most teams.

SM was pretty bad last year. Hoping he proves all us naysayers wrong.

I do not think he will thrive under Sutter.

Was Backlund ever a 2C? I always thought of him as an ideal 3C who ended up at 2C from lack of depth at C.

Treliving also looked devastated at the draft - and my theory is that they wanted C Sillinger. If we don't make the playoffs, the Flames will try to draft a quality Center next year again to fix this issue. Not getting Sillinger might have been a major short coming, (and possible turning point, considering the complications with Eichel & no other alternative out there) in Treliving's mind. This might give us insight into how management foresees Zary's ceiling - perhaps more of a 2C/3C. If worst comes to worst, they could throw Coleman at C and let that play itself out.

Tre has to suck it up and give up one or two first round picks to get a quality center, if they want this group to make a push. If it works out, those 1sts will only be late 1st round picks anyway.

- eastcanadAREaholes

Not opposed to giving up that for Eichel, Gadreau would sign on the dotted line if that was his new center.
But I don't want to neuter the prospect pool at this point.

If i'm Buffalo, i'm countering with:
Zary
Coronato
Tkatchuk
and a pick

Nay on that proposal, Chucky is important going forward for the Flames. I think my proposal is a fair one especially considering Eichel wants to have to surgery. IMO the Sabres need to move forward from him and let him have a fresh start.

On a side note I don't understand why other Flames fans are so optimistic on Monohan? Can you imagine his numbers if it wasn't for Gaudreau? Monohan has shown he isn't a physical player whatsoever, he shouldn't even be a centre because he does jack squat. Unfortunately the Flames are stuck with him because the rest of the GM's know the same thing. JG is the main priority to get resigned.

Monahan isn't paid like a top tier center either

He is still a very good NHLer...not a "problem"

I would trade him for the right deal like anyone else

every team but Tampa should have tanked

Flames missed the playoffs by one win (even though they won more games than Montreal lol NHL)

They went 3-1 Vs. the Canucks after being eliminated but really it would be almost impossible to lose all of those. They had to put the 3rd string (at best) goalie in to lose that one

Duran, how goes everything man? Hope Life is treating you well

Yeah, I agree with you, I hope Monohan proves us all wrong and has an awesome season. Sutter is an interesting coach, lets see who he does under him. It might not be a bad thing for Monohan.

The Sabres say yes to your proposal.

They do not want Tkachuk as they know he wouldn't want to play in Buffalo.

Good base for Buf tbh. Gets kids, with pedigree. I think this is the kind package KA is looking for

Now find a way to make it work for the NHL. It drives the flames over the cap limit, while still having an incomplete roster, and drops BUF even further below the floor. Buffalo needs to add 8+M to their cap to make the floor, or else face penalties that could include losing their 1st round pick(s) with JE on their roster. Adding 3-4 guys on entry level deals, while shedding Jack's 10M doesn't help solve that. And most of the guys on calgary's roster that have bigger contracts also have some form of a NTC likely making a trade to BUF impossible money wise.

There are ways to make it work, although I suspect the Sabres owner would protest mightily (retain some on Eichel's deal, trade for a cap dump from another team).

The Sabres could also take Lucic back in the deal with the promise they would ship him out to a team of his preference, while retaining 50% to help their own cap.

Sabres fan here checking in for replies and it's nice to see a healthy discussion on this site for once lol. I would be content with all those guys and maybe throw in one other one. Someone on a one-year contract type. I know you just acquired m but I was really hoping Buffalo went after zadorov. So I will take that 4 million off your books LOL. Most likely not going to happen but I'm a big fan of his from when he was a rookie with us and hated it when he got traded for O'Reilly. But if you need to throw in a piece do you have a right defenseman laying around. I only say this in terms of the best package you guys have tossed up is excellent but what 900k comes up your salary cap with 10 million coming back. Remember what I said earlier they will take a bad contract if there's only one year left on it. We badly need a goalie but I don't think you have anything there and right defense. Side note Flames fans What happened to your goalie zagidulin?
I had him on my list for a two-way contract for buffalo but now all this time has gone by and he still doesn't have a team. Is he one of those guys that signed in Russia and I missed it somehow? There were 4 guys I had on my short list for two ways. I thought the Sabres should take a flyer on Julius honka a free right defenseman, then three goalies... Your guy, Marcus hogberg and the kid that was on Columbus and got traded to Toronto at the deadline. I can't spell it and push-to-talk won't even try so veinalain
Or something like that. But everyone but the Calgary goalie did sign contracts overseas and I don't know how that works if they're allowed to come back or not okay now I'm just rambling would love some input

Lucic, Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Coleman, Tanev, and Markstrom all have some degree of NTC. None are waiving for Buffalo. And none are waiving to go to Buffalo if a promise to be flipped afterwards for fear that it wipes their NTC.
