If frost wasn’t a first round pick I doubt people would want to rush him up. Yes he is promising. And yes brassard is insurance. It’a not like he played in the khl and is an unknown either. Everyone was pencilling sandin in last year. Eggs and chickens.

Rookies need to earn their ice time and place on the team. These signings of leadership type veterans will and should challenge the rookies and young players to up their game and work hard to earn their spot. Competition can’t hurt and if they can’t beat these players out then they will not deserve to play on the NHL club. They need to earn it and not have it handed to them.

I understand the "good" signing ... but it is another block for the younger players. That and it raises the question, are the Flyers that close that this kind of a move could put them over the top?

IMHO, this is a placate the coach move. And Fletcher covering himself. But just my opinion.

I agree this is AV influence. Just ask Rangers fans what they thought of AV at the end, they were not happy with his over-reliance on Veteran players at the expense of youth development.

Reading the article today about the Brassard signing he stated that he is more comfortable playing wing at this point in his career but is comfortable enough to play all 3 forward positions.

only recall like one or two people stating sandin was a lock, that he wouldn't have come over unless he was being handed a spot. it was pretty funny honestly.

People seem to forget that Frost missed an entire year with a shoulder injury. These signings are an insurance policy nothing more.

Frost starting in the AHL hurts no one and is probably the smart move.

If he plays great and wins a job out of camp nothing prevents Thompson or Brassard from being scratched or waived.

- MBFlyerfan

The Flyers have Scott Laughton, who in my opinion is a better 3C than Brassard is. They have Thompson and other options such as Laczynski and Bunnaman who also could be used at 4C. So while I would agree that the AHL is an option for Frost to start, they did not need to sign Brassard for that reason in my opinion.

The best players are going to get the spots. If Frost outplays Brassard, he will play and then you have NHL experience waiting in the wings. I don’t see a problem here.
- mkabbeko

In my experience, that's not quite how it works. This move in my opinion indicates that their plan is to have Frost start in the AHL. So Frost would have to do far more than outplay Brassard to earn a spot.

If it motivates Frost to bring his game to camp I’m all for it.

I'm sure Frost wants to be an NHL player and after missing all but a few games of last season, why wouldn't he already be motivated to the max? Is that what they need to do now? Sign fringe vets to motivate younger players? If that needs to be done to motivate Frost than signing Brassard won't matter in a bit in that context.

I agree. I think Frost has to come into camp and just blow people away to earn the spot. Nothing wrong with starting with Phantoms.

I tend to think Allison solidified a spot with his play at the end of last year. Of course, he still needs to prove it in camp.

I still think NAK is on the bubble. Different game than Frost so if he plays hard (physical) and smart (no stupid penalties) in camp, then he gets shot.

I can't see York opening the season in Philly.

It should be interesting.

I see no real reason why Tanner L shouldn't beat out NAK for wing if they don't pot him at center. He's just a better all around player period.

For what it's worth, Nate Thompson participated in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season.

I like having vets in the line-up. We have seemed to address our need to lower goals against. Now it is up to our top 6/9 to put the puck in the net. If that happens and Hart bounces back, it won't matter (as much) who the F our 3 and 4Cs are.

Nothing wrong with having the young kids prove themselves and earn the spot. Brassard may be blocking Frost at this stage. If Frost performs as well as we think he should, that forces CF and AV to get him in the line-up. If not, he plays important minutes in LV and we plug in a veteran C. Same with York/Yandle.

- cdearth23

Thompson as an injury fill in is fine, I don't believe that is the role he was brought here to play. He's going to be a fixture in the lineup. The more you see of him the less there is to like.

Not questioning Frost’s motivation ir drive. Just saying a healthy competition doesn’t hurt anyone. Fringe vets were signed as the back up. Between injuries, the several back to backs, and Covid it doesn’t hurt to have depth. Brassard and Thompson won’t be regulars if younger guys player better.
