This is where we disagree. I don't think the fringe vets were signed as backup. I see them as ahead of players like Frost on the depth chart. - MJL
while I agree with you, if they out play the vets they will get the nod, no? At this point someone like a Frost should be able to. If you are CF and you know Frost hasn't played much, could get injured again, you lost last season because your youth stagnated mostly, should you not address it? Best case for all is Frost earns 3C, the Tanner beats out Thompson. That said Thompson has the qualities of a 4C, one you can count on, just can't put up points.
I see this as the most competitive camp since Hexy started the rebuild.

not a center but almost the same deal and is 21
Svechnikov 8 years 7.5 - wcorvette
Mhm. Flyers got a very good deal. Canes perhaps got an absolute steal. He isn’t quite the two-way player Coots is, but that looks nice.
Svech is very young to have taken that, but I guess he’s lined himself up for two big paydays in his career. |

Maybe, but I think it is smart not to rely on a guy who missed so much time expecting he can step right in to an NHL role. The smart move is starting him in the AHL and if he knocks the NHL door down more power to him.
The obvious plan is that they expect him to get top line minutes for the Phantoms to get his legs back and I dont think its a bad plan. |

Here comes stronzo with still spewing the false narrative. Show one poster who said he will test free agency?
With the exception of 3 guys on their last leg's on min deals every free agent agrees with you them not being a destination. - hello it's me 2050
@ false narrative. you've been wanting him to tell the flyers to kick rocks for the last year you complete clown. |

I think the 4C position should be manned by a veteran. Thompson, Brassard, even Laughton bring qualities a young pro just doesn't have. If Bunny or Tanner (The Bull) completely outplay all other 4C options in camp, we are still missing all of those NHL games played. PK experience.
I am a fan of having a strong mix of vets and younger players. If we "sacrifice" our 4C and a winger and slot a grizzled veteran in those spots, are we really losing that much?? We need proven shutdown players in those roles (and on PK- obviously).
Laughton - Thompson - Brassard as a line. Late game. Protecting a lead. All three can win face-offs.
Just my two cents. I've said previously that we will not lift the Cup until G and even Coots are in secondary roles. Still team leaders, but we need others to defend and put the puck in the net. TK, Farabee, Hayes, Atkinson, JVR. |

Cheap is a bit of a stretch. We pretty much assumed he was going to get what Giroux got. We saved 525k - xShoot4WarAmpsx
I don't know that I agree with this train of thought. Seeing what some other players were getting paid, particularly defenseman, I expected coots to come in at around 9m per so I see it as a 1.25m saving. For a former selke winner who is in the yearly mix for the seller award I really expected it to be more! I'm thrilled with it though. Now we can afford to pay Nate Thompson! Yessss! |

Outstanding deal. Well done Chuck. - MJL
It is an absolutely fantastic deal for the flyers!! I laughed and let out a yell when I saw we locked him up for 8 years at 7.75!!
Incredible job, chuck! |

What is with the 1 year Nate Thompson contract obsession? I couldn't imagine being so upset about a nearly league minimum 1 year deal for a player. |

They didn't have to rely on Frost even before they signed Brassard. It was already covered.

No, they have to do far more than just outplay the vets. They have to blow it away to remove all doubt. it sets the bar a lot higher for those players.
