This is a good deal. I applaud Fletch.
I have never been a fan of Coots. That said, it is a good deal for the Flyers and any possible trade partners down the road.

This isn’t a deal to gripe about.
Ristolainen, Thompson, and Brassard? Sure. Retaining AV and his lackeys? Even more.
Couturier deal is a win. - FlyerFan3260

NTC? - THE EVIL WITHIN
NTC or NMC? I've hear there is one included. Makes it much more difficult. Player has to agree on destination.
Even with a NTC, there is still a option based on the player's preferences, correct? There are very few true NO TRADE clauses. Players still can get moved as long as they agree to it? Or is that strictly a NMC... |

The same folks griping about the term would be griping instead about cap hit had it been something several seasons shorter. - bmeltzer
It's a great deal 👌 Loui Eriksson and Karlsson was bad deals from the get go. |

EDIT: Clause: Clauses are additional parameters added to contracts that protect the player in certain transactions. No-Movement Clauses (NMCs) and No-Trade Clauses (NTCs) are negotiated by a player and his representatives to limit the types of transactions that can be performed by the team with respect to that player. Players are only eligible for these clauses in years when they would be eligible for Unrestricted Free Agency (27 years of age or older, or 7 or more accrued seasons).
– An NMC prohibits a team from moving a player by trade, loan or waivers, or assigning that player to the minors without the player’s consent. This keeps the player with the pro team unless that player permits a move by one of these means. An NMC does not restrict a team from buying out or terminating a player’s contract.
– An NTC is less prohibitive, as it only places restrictions on movement by trade. A player with an NTC cannot be traded by a team unless the player provides consent. A Partial or Modified NTC is often less restrictive than a Full NTC, and is defined by the conditions outlined in the player’s contract. Often these NTCs have conditions that give the player the right to provide a list of teams to which the player can or cannot be traded. Many players will have NMCs tied to their contracts with Partial or Modified NTCs. These prevent the team from moving the player via loan or waivers, but give the team options for trading the player.

How could anyone knock this deal? There are guys getting 9-10 mil a year that are not as good as Coots….anyone think he should have been paid less then JVR or Hayes?
The player took less for term….good on him. As the cap will start to raise next year this deal will age better then some think. Keep in mind he “is” the Flyers best player. |

Remember that in 5 yrs when he has 4 yrs left on his contract - hfc355

An NMC goes a little bit farther so that the player cannot be drafted by expansion teams, nor can they be be waived and/or sent to the minors. |

Wow under contract for 9 more years till age 38....This contract isnt going to age well at all...He didnt take a discount he just got his salary spread over a longer period of time by giving him 8 yrs on top of his 1 remaining year...With a couple of knee injuries in the past and having limited speed to start with back half of this contract gonna be a killer. - hfc355

This is a direct consequence from the hard cap bull**** the NHL has implemented, teams today sign those players to max term deals in the expectation that the cap will keep going up every year and make the contract look more palatable in the future. If teams were allowed to go over the cap and pay some sort of luxury tax, they would be able throw the money on short term deals that would give them the flexibility to turn the ship around if things don't work out.
the league needs to do a better job in the next CBA negotiations to protect the team front offices from those long term contracts. Not just to protect the GMs from their own stupidity but also from the predatory nature of players agents looking to maximize their earnings. They should do like the NBA and restrict to 4 years deals, 5 if you stay with the same team. It would make off seasons more entertaining as well with more star players moving in and out.
