What a dumb comment!!
Aren't we all?
But to get there it is a step by step process.
I realize that no one can build a team that fits what in your head so why don't you pick a new team and go on their board and whine about every phucking move...
You're ponderous!

I think you read a bit much into that

What information is there that Giroux won't be re-signed?
- MJL
It was reported by my buddies on Sirius/XM NHL Network late this afternoon that Fletcher came out and said that they would deal with Giroux AFTER the upcoming season has concluded. That basically makes him a UFA if they choose to go that route.

Unless they sign him after the seasons end but before July 1st. Assuming the dates go back to normal seasons.

That is exactly what's likely to happen. It's a matter of figuring out term and cap hit (which will be lower than his current AAV by a significant amount but how much is TBD). Again, the Flyers want Giroux to be here, and he wants to stay. If there were any significant chance of him wanting out or the organization wanting to move he'd have been asked to waive his NMC for the Expansion Draft and there'd be a plan for a change in captaincy even had he gone unselected. There was never an inkling that any of that was a possibility.... if there had been, Friedman, LeBrun, etc., would have been all over it because it would've been a major story.

Nah, I’ve read he doesn’t care about winning. He can take it or leave it.
- Ftown19125

exactly as that is why he will be in philly next year.

I know some dislike Chuck but the reality is: with the ample changes he made this summer, if the Flyers win a playoff series or two he is likely a candidate for GM of the year IMO. Agree or disagree?
- arichardson22

In order to reach the end goal you have to win playoff series, so that would be swell.
But I still don't think this team is close to contending for a Stanley Cup. Time will tell.

You're wrong on that one. This is a bad contract period. The Flyers are over paying for past performance because they just under paid for past performance.
I've been on this site 14 years and rarely disagreed with you, but the fact you're hopeful the Giroux/Coots contracts will even out to what the Flyers paid for them the past 5 years is wrong. The G/Coots combo will be worse in 2022 than they were in 2019 for example. They should cost less.

This is how teams create a black hole for themselves. (see: Anaheim, San Jose) Overpaying for past performance and holding on too long to former standout players.

- kennygarcon

You make a lot of good points here. The Flyers are likely paying for past performance for a good portion of this contract. I think short term, Couturier will be worth every penny, and you could argue he's worth more. But the back end of the contract will likely be somewhat of an anchor. I think all things considered the contract is ok. The first four years will be good, the last four might be tough.

Both the team and the player agreed to table negotiations until after the season. That does not point to Giroux leaving the team.

I told you all Couts would sign a team friendly deal for under $8M because he wanted to stay here. The Landeskog deal was the right comparison. Fletcher ROCKS!!

8 years gets Couts to 36years old. I think he will earn every penny of this new contract, because of the type of player he is and how he plays the game. Couts is very similar to Bergeron, and those types of players earn their money with points, but with so much more!

The AAV will be team friendly for a portion of the contract, the length isn't team friendly. Couturier could have gotten more money over the course of a short term contract, which probably would have been preferred.

You could be right. Hopefully his play doesn't drop off significantly as he ages. The first half of the contract is great no doubt about it.

I see it being 6 really good years and then a decline. However even in the last few years, he won't be a top line player anymore but he sill still be a serviceable player. The Flyers have no chance to win the Cup in the near future without Couturier. Signing him to a full term deal to keep the AAV down is the smart move.

Your math is a little off. The deal will get Couturier to 37 years old. Not 36

Actually, there is considerable difference between the Couturier deal and the Landeskog deal.

8 yr deal is not team friendly.plus the 1 yr he has left so 9 yrs with NTC...Thats not team friendly. On open market his deal would have been for 7 yrs at 8 maybe 8.5M max so same $$ amount. Locked into a NTC for next 8 yrs...again thats not team friendly. He signed what he was able to negotiate but didnt give Flyers any discounts

ex selke made this deal happen. He took less. Sorry not giving the GM much praise when he really didn't have to do much on this deal.

First, everyone keeps saying they signed 28 yo Couturier. He's going to be 29 this year and will be 30 at the beg of his new contract, which really means they signed 30 yo Couturier to an 8-year contract with a NMC.

Second, the consensus is it will look good for the next 3-4 yrs. What about the last 4 years?

Finally, according to CapFriendly in 2022-23 the Flyers have $61MM allocated to 11 players, meaning they only have about $21MM- $24MM to sign the other 11 players, of which these include notables such as Farabee, Risto (unless Fletcher want to admit he just flat out wasted a 1st round pick) and Giroux.

I can see them having difficulty scoring. Defense should be worlds better, but that’ll depend on if the team comes together as a unit wanting to work together. They need to have a chip on their shoulder
