Who is arguing? I asked a simple question. - hello it's me 2050
so two opposing sides is not an argument? Not saying it is adversarial but he provided his examples, you want to see the other side of it then provide it in the conversation.

According to Fletcher, it’s in no small part because Couturier was open to sacrificing a bit of money to give the Flyers the chance to be a more competitive team.

This is why I do not give the GM much credit for this deal. Ex selke made it happen. The way Chuck negotiates he probably offered more....

LOL, well that is one opinion. What CF did over the off-season clearly had an impact on Coots. That was part of the negotiation.

8 years gets Couts to 36years old. I think he will earn every penny of this new contract, because of the type of player he is and how he plays the game. Couts is very similar to Bergeron, and those types of players earn their money with points, but with so much more! - jd250
Except his bday in early December. He will turn 38 in last year of new contract 2 months into season. |

8 yr deal is not team friendly.plus the 1 yr he has left so 9 yrs with NTC...Thats not team friendly. On open market his deal would have been for 7 yrs at 8 maybe 8.5M max so same $$ amount. Locked into a NTC for next 8 yrs...again thats not team friendly. He signed what he was able to negotiate but didnt give Flyers any discounts - hfc355
This guy gets it |

First, everyone keeps saying they signed 28 yo Couturier. He's going to be 29 this year and will be 30 at the beg of his new contract, which really means they signed 30 yo Couturier to an 8-year contract with a NMC.
Second, the consensus is it will look good for the next 3-4 yrs. What about the last 4 years?
Finally, according to CapFriendly in 2022-23 the Flyers have $61MM allocated to 11 players, meaning they only have about $21MM- $24MM to sign the other 11 players, of which these include notables such as Farabee, Risto (unless Fletcher want to admit he just flat out wasted a 1st round pick) and Giroux. - mr4tno
This team will be middling for next 5 + years maybe decade. Ellis Hayes coots risto (when signed long term) all big deals in 30’s yep that’s how league trending. Laughable. This team blows. Coots got 2 maybe 3 really good years left (good by his standards). There’s a ton of miles on that body. We aren’t talking about the last couple years of his deal. We’re talking the last 5-6 years of that deal. poopty Fletcher will be long gone by then and next “hextall type” gm will have to waste a few years trying to clean up fletch mess and be fired by some other suit ( hell might even be Scott still). Wash rinse repeat with this team.
And of course hb flyers lover will be defending every move the games the same only the names have changed.
We went from move Jvr Jake to it’ll be coots Hayes
And after next gm cleans it up we’ll be giving the current young guys (farabee) for example some huge deal when it’s too late. Wash rinse repeat.
GO CANES!!!!! |

If he asked for say 8.75 per, do you think Chuck would have said no?

question seems relevant, as he didn't ask for that, and fletcher didn't need to say yes or no to it. |

So they went "all in" with the moves they made. Where would rank them as a cup contender? Top 5? 10? 15? 20?
Players get excited when they get the cash 9 out of 10 times. - hello it's me 2050
On paper, since its all I have to go on, I would say right now the Flyers are comfortably in the top 10 of cup contenders, but not in the top 5. |

It all depends on what Giroux will be willing to do. I personally believe he is going to have a strong season barring any significant injury. - MJL
Yes, I feel he will as well. I think there is a lot of excitement and rejuvenation on this team right now, and that is something many players will ride this coming season. I do believe that G will take less to stay in Philly and maximize Fletcher's ability to keep this team together longer. |

Doesn't matter what the question seems now does it? How do you know he didn't ask for it? Were you privy to the negations?

Some posters really struggle with math.
Couturier is 28 now and will turn 29 during the upcoming season. He will not turn 30 until December of the 22/23 season. That will make him 37 during the final year of his new contract. Not 36 and not 38. |

he took what he took, so your question is irrelevant.
we should just keep asking hypotheticals that don't matter. that would be fun. |

As GM I would have said sure but its 6 or 7 yrs not 8..In fact I would prefer a contract of 8.75M for 6 yrs. |

He was always getting 8 years. Unless they paid him 11+ per.

It seems like every time a major contract is signed, it has to be explained how things work. Players like leverage. It gets them what they want. It's why Sanheim was willing to sign a two year deal. He gets future leverage. Negotiations are a give and take. Couturier took less money than he could likely get on an open market UFA deal. In exchange for doing so, he received 8 years of security, which is one more year than he can get with another team as a UFA. Plus, and here is the major part of the contract that separates his deal from a player like Landeskog. The signing bonus structure of the contract makes it completely buyout proof. Which means no matter what, he will get paid the full value of the contract. |

so strange. |

Then I would have traded him at the deadline could have gotten quite a bit for him....way way to long a contract with a full NTC for a guy who has had knee problems...is going to be 38 during last year of contract . Love Couts but not a team helpful deal. |
