This is the best thing to happen all off season.
Not only does mtl offload KK for 2 picks. But also people will stop complaining how they should of drafted Tkachuk instead.
Also, atleast we get something in return for a player that is consistently benched |

I kinda doubt that, the Tkachuk boner will reappear every time the habs play the senators.
also, everyone seems to forget KK is 21 years old... of course you'd want his development to be quicker and more consistent but the kid undeniably has lots of potential. |

At 6.1 He would be the 2nd highest paid Foward on the Habs behind Gallagher. This does not compute. |

Too much analysis and not enough appreciation of the revenge skill inherent in this offer..
So, is it effective revenge?
Absolutely!
The fact that Dundon overpaid by $4m is the point. He is saying "I will blow $4m to make my point. Even more if necessary." The more subtle subtext might be "and I have no intention of stopping here. If you match, I will have $9m for Suzuki next year."
Full marks to Carolina. Do they now own Bergeron? How does Bergeron respond in public over the next week is really important. Does he ask for a mercy rule? Does he ask for peace? Does he acknowledge that Aho was probably a miscalculation on his part?
Often with revenge there is a follow up and I think this is just the first strike. Revenge is sort of like the suicide bomber mentality where the person seeking revenge cares little about the damage he does to himself. He only cares about inflicting as much pain as possible on the revenge target.
Understood in that light, it is clear that Bergeron has been spanked, very hard.
You know that every other owner and GM in the NHL is laughing and cheering on Carolina to inflict as much long term damage as possible to the Canadiens. It is most unfortunate. |

So I've been thinking about it, and...
I'll be there fool who thinks we *should* match. The compensation just isn't worth it
In fact, I say we offer him 4x6.1. If he goes to Carolina and breaks out, he'll never make less than 6 anyways, as a young center. And we'll all be sitting here bemoaning the fact that we let another one get away in a bad trade. (An offer sheet is just a hostile trade offer.)
The youth movement seemed to really come together in the last playoffs, who can forget the KK shout out to the black aces after scoring in his first game after being benched? If MB decides to give up on him, then he may poison the well, so to speak.
This is MBs chance to really put his stamp on this team. Yeah, the GM (MB or not...) may have to give Suzuki more, but we can also start locking them in long term for reasonable contracts, like they do in Boston. (That made me gag a bit...I always hated how they managed to keep their core...)
KK plays with edge... So give him Anderson and Gallagher. (Power line)
Suzuki with Hoffman/Drouin and Caufield. (Snipe show line)
Evans with Byron and Drouin/Hoffman (Energy line)
Poehling with Lek and Armia (Sandpaper line)
Will it sting? Yup, sure will. Worth it...? Yeah, I think it's worth the risk. |

As an aside, with the draft in Montreal this year? Our first is going nowhere in any package for a replacement center. Just won't happen. |

sweet jeebus lol... sure the retaliation was 100% warranted, and it might not be the most ideal situation, but it isn't like this automatically leaves the habs in complete shambles either. worst-case scenario they'll be getting a 1st and a 3rd round pick out of it, and it doesn't prevent Bergevin from acquiring a center somewhere else. |

yeah, I'm a fan of KK and I'm 100% convinced he'll be a very good player, but no chance in hell I'd give him that type of money and term (4yrs X 6.1M) at this stage in his career, considering what he's accomplished so far (or hasn't accomplished lol). I agree the compensation isn't necessarily adequate, but imho it all depends on what Bergevin currently has in the works in terms of acquiring a top 6 center... if there's a deal to be made then it would most certainly alleviate KK's departure.

So I wake up to this today and 10 pages of responses. I can't read all that. Can someone explain why this isn't a 26 million salary cap hit? Bonuses do count against the cap don't they?

Because the signing bonus is $20.00, not $20,000,000. |

Revenge? I guess it would be if KK was proven the way Aho was when MB offered sheeted him. They must be banking hard on KK having a good year in Carolina which is quite possible especially if KK solves his consistency issues. However this could blow up in Waddell's and Dundan's face pretty hard if he doesnt and gets outproduced/hustled by a guy like Necas who is up for a deal next summer. This contract already puts Carolina against the cap and if Necas does outproduce KK how much will he want? The same question we ask here about if MB does match, how much will Suzuki want? I think the sound choice here is to let him walk, take the picks and put together a package for a guy like Dvorak. |

Something tells me Bergevin will match, but something tells me he just can't. Main reason being this. You have to give him the same next season. He would screw their own salary structure.
Oh, and the pressure to play up to 6M? Good luck with that.
Lots of mistakes being made on that move. |

are we REALLY....still waiting for KK to develop into a 2C,,,more like wishing he would....sorry but matching the offer sheet is suicide....good luck in Raleigh KK.....Carolina and their new Trumpster on D should have a marvelous season......on and off the ice...... - Hockey Pucker
yeah, get that 21-year-old bum outta here, he's clearly past his prime and will most likely retire soon.

bah, for one season it shouldn't be that much pressure, and KK is most likely aware the amount he's getting stems from a retaliation strategy.

There's almost no way he can match it. They did it on purpose now so that they couldn't use the Weber LTIR savings. |
