If he signs with Carolina I don't think they have to wait for the first year of the contract to be complete before they can offer him a new long term deal. Which means they DON'T have to qualify him at 6.1. There might be a wink\nod with his agent that IF Montreal doesn't match, this 6.1 will be his bonus on a "show me" deal, and he'll get a 3 to 5 year deal at a lower amount more befitting of a 50 point 3rd line center.
