Depends what you are aiming for. If you want a cup while you still have price at the top of his game, I’d argue you need a superstar and let Suzuki settle into the 2nd line role. - cburgess
If we want a cup we need that plus getting Ekholm as our 1st line LHD if we have the cap space |

A serious question for Montreal fans:
What are the chances that KK goes to Carolina and has a breakout season? Is there any universe where he can actually live up to that contract? - TommyGTrain
Not likely at all. I’m assuming the canes know the habs will match so may aswell make them spend a few more million then they wanted to. |

I doubt they would have that much space with all the money they are paying to the wingers. |

But what centre are you gonna bring in that’s gonna make an impact tho? I guess that’s my point. Like ya, you can trade for a Sam Reinhardt, but Is that gonna pit you over the top? Absolutely not. - cburgess
I guess it depends how good you see Suzuki. A good 2nd C would really help.
Habs have some good wingers and depth at that position.
They went into the finals with Suzuki, Danault, Evans, KK (some games) and Staal.
You won't see a team as good as that Tampa team every year. |

Ok, but danault is gone and he did a fantastic job shutting down the top guy on the other team. You don’t have anyone now to fill that role. And their defence played solid and price was fantastic. Expecting them to do that again is asking a bit much |

You are saying they need a superstar C. Danault was good at what he did, but far from a superstar. |

They also downgraded on Weber with Savard. Unless they make some monumental team changing trade, this team needs to rebuild. They were a fringe team at best with KK taking steps forward, now they're easily missing the playoffs. I wonder if anybody would take Price with a few million retained to try and take a run. |

Ya, they need a superstar now because they won’t be able to play their team defence the same way. Who are you putting up against Austin matthews now in a playoff series? I doubt you want Suzuki doing that cause he’s the one guy left that can create offense. |

The only way I see it is if he moves to wing on the top 6. He won’t beat out Aho or Trochek. If he doesn’t thrive, lots of teams need centers.

I’m on board with this. Last year was the closest they were gonna get for a while. It will be a stretch to make the playoffs this year since they are going back to the regular divisions |

KK is not worth $6M but is is worth more than Canes first and third pick…
I think Bergevin will not match or match and trade…. Retaining some money…
If he packages a good prospect, plus KK at $4M(retaining 2 only for 1 year ) plus his first rounder (even if draft is in Montréal…) what would we get as 2nd Center…
Monahan?

If Montreal matches the Offer Sheet, then under NHL rules Kotkaniemi CANNOT be traded for one full year --- which just happens to be the length of the contract. |

I'd rather we don't match and then try to trade for Monahan with our other prospects and or picks.
Honestly though we're better off rebuilding. Even if we got Monahan without losing anything on the roster we're still a good right handed mobile defenseman away from having a good enough team to compete for anything. |
