You are excellent in Monday morning quarterbacking things.
If Ullmark was worth locking up, per you, then he should have carried them to a playoff spot, no? Oh, wait. He was hurt yet again. - Powerslave
I'm bottom line it like this: If the team believed in him, then try to sign him to a long term deal each of the past 2 offseasons. If they didn't, then trade him and move on to other potential long term solutions.
Either way, make a decision for the future of the team.
Also, banking on Hutton or UPL being able to play well last season was a bad, bad idea, and it turned out exactly that way. |

LOL, after trying to be a playoff game with a goaltending duo of Ullmark and Hutton.
Tanking wasn't a plan, it was a reaction to the plan not working for last season.
Lots of short term, one year plans going around by the Sabres.
No wonder they continue to suck for years on end. |

Well, this one won't be a one year plan. As long as they actually stick to it this time. |

They've never stuck to a long term plan for more than 2 seasons.
I'm not expecting any different this time.
Hell, Adams is already on his second plan and he's only been the GM for 14 months. |

I think we're seeing commitment to a plan. Four 1st round selections in two years with 19 picks overall in the same span, before an Eichel trade |

I for one would love to see Eichel NOT get traded away in the next 3 weeks, after that if he is still on the roster at training camp time, The Sabres will absolutely fail Eichel physical and then suspend him without pay for not getting the surgery the team wanted and it will all be legal within the CBA.
Then I will sit back and get my popcorn ready for the greatest shat show on earth....

I'll make it clear for you since you're having difficulty understanding.
1. You may have been the only person who thought planning on having UPL start some games for the Sabres last year when they were trying to win was a good idea and plan. It was not. Fail.
2. After the 2018-2019 season where Ullmark had a 905 save percentage (convenient that you left that out, but hardly a surprise), I would've been trying to see if he would sign a 4 year deal at $2M to $2.5M per, banking on his continued development.
3. After the 2019-2020 season, I would've been attempting again to try and sign Ullmark to a 4 year deal, this time for $3M to $4M per, again banking on his continued development.
4. If he said yes to the deal after 18-19 or 19-20, I would've done everything possible to bring in another starter level goaltender to split starts with Ullmark, and waived Hutton.
5. If Ullmark said no to the deal after the 18-19 and 19-20 deals offered, I would've brought in 2 starter level goaltenders to split starts, traded Ullmark, and waived Hutton.
They were trying to be a winning, playoff team last offseason, and the goaltending was an embarrassment.
It was clearly an embarrassment during last offseason, and when the season began.
Only the Sabres seemed to fail to see that, which is not a surprise considering their track record.
You also seem to have failed to see the goaltending being a big issue considering you were expecting UPL to be making spot starts.
I've never been a huge fan of Ullmark, but he's a competent NHL goaltender.
You either invest in him or you move him.
You don't nickel and dime it until you lose him for nothing, but I guess that's what a team with virtually zero long term plan does. - kingcong39
Very well explained. And appreciated...
Now please help me explain the loss of an asset in regards to ka-boo-hoo-hun.
You seemed pretty upset with the Sabres mismanagement....
Looks like a good decision seeing that he is no longer an nhl player- basically my opinion after seeing him as a sabre.
You still havent acknowledged the turn over of contract decision makers in the Sabres front office.
Each new gm would definitely like to see 1st hand what ullmark brings to the table, again:
Practice effort?
Work ethic?
Ability to stay healthy?
Coachability?
Intangibles, aside from a decent save %.
What kinda value were you expecting after a 3+ gaa?
Sounds like a jimmi vesey 3rd....
I'd rather see if ullmark actually could play 75-80% of the games without going down with an injury.
See if he's truly a nhl starter, before paying him long term.
Also, you pretend that there was no plan in place.
Clearly the Sabres had 2 plans.
Win with hall, stahl, sam, risto , mccabe and eichel
Or
Go for wright.....
Ullmark didn't fit either plan☝️

Because maybe he values securing long term financial security? Many young players have done so- especially ones in the tier of players he's likely to occupy.
On the one hand, he can guarantee himself 20mil (in your 4 x 5 example) on top of the 6mil or take the 6mil this year and then only accept the qualifying offers on 1-year deals until the Canes pay him or he hits UFA. If at any point he proves himself worthy of being paid 6mil on a longer contract, I'm sure the Canes will pay him and be happy with it because then he's lived up to the cost of the 1st and a 3rd. - MaximumBone
I have a hard time believing he’ll accept significantly less then his qualifying offer on a long term deal. Kinda defeats the purpose of a qualifying offer. And 16M, if he’s really a need for comfort person, is more then enough which is what he’ll make just by qualifying plus his rookie deal. I just don’t see it |

How long do you keep the bar low for a player?
3 years of NHL play? 5? - kingcong39
Did we have a choice of olofsson over drysatlyl?
No
How long does the nhl keep the salaries low for a 7th round pick vs. 2nd overall?
Seems absolutely crazy that you dislike olofsson.
Your kinda looking to bash the Sabres every post.
Sam at 6.5 million x 3 years
Olofsson at 3.05 x 2 years
I'd take olo but,

I would have spotted ullmark's talent and got him to sign cheap 2 years ago, because he is an nhl starting goalie.
Ullmark isnt good enough to carrying the team to the playoffs
Should have traded ullmark, who's not good enough for a huge return....

ullmark has been a 1B goalie for many years
this falls on management for not locking him up in the 20 or 19 offseason

How about a team not being 100% sure about a players talent or whether or not he could stay healthy?
How about new management every other year, evaluating their players ,before handing out contracts....
If he stayed healthy, each new gm would actually get a fair evaluation of his talent. Not the case though...

Sit this one out kiddo...
I'm not directing these posts towards you and your love affair....
He gone, and his return was minuscule....
He was not the player you pretended over the past 7 years I've been posting.
A future 1st (most likely 20's) and a teams 7th round , 3rd or 4th on the depth chart goalie.
It's over..... you were wrong

imaganie if I brought that up 5-9 times a day since you were on this site
that is the level of the problem you have

I'm not sure why you are so sensitive to sam?
Slow dave was not the difference between a cup or no cup.
Mucklers loyalty to fuhr was a joke.
Hasek was clearly better, but we had to keep chubby in net.
