That wouldn't be saving face, that would be the nail in the coffin. If KK isn't open to signing a reduced AAV extension in Mtl, like it is rumored he will in Carolina, MB better just take the picks and move on. If he matches just to keep him for a year before having to qualify him at 6 again, ouch.

Again, some mediocre center plug into the middle 6 is not going to make or break the Habs season.

If the Habs are taking the picks, use them wisely, get talent and go full rebuild. They should be doing that, regardless if KK is part of the team or not.

Anything else should be the defacto end of MB sooner than later.

sorry but with Price on roster, Gally, Petry, Edmonson, Hoffman, Anderson, Toffoli...they cannot go full rebuild...that' crazy talk.....i think KK is not happy in Mtl....he signed a trolling RFA contract that had a $20 bonus and a final # of $6,000,015....he deleted the CH insignia from the twitter feed....maybe the 2 picks and shopping them around is the best option..maybe a 2nd 3rd and a young D man gets a better deal done for a more reliable C...either way the KK era looks to be over ..unless MB cannot get a decent deal then he must swallow hard and keep KK for at least a year.

From my perspective the only things that should matter are whether Kotkaniemi really wants out of Montreal, whether he signed because he'd be stupid not to take that money or whether it's both. If he wants out, sadly I think the Habs need to eat a poopty return and move on
- Takemedrunkimhome

The fact that he signed the offer sheet tells me he doesn’t want to be here plain and simple

Do you honestly think Aho wanted to be in Montreal? I think Kotkaniemi wants out but he was offered more money than he'd likely have got over two if not three seasons, he'd have been stupid to not sign it

not sure who would win a race between those two.

Sometimes there is no logic or math and we can just assume they both lose

Can't blame him for signing it. That doesn't mean he doesn't also want out...just doesn't mean he does want out either

I do think he wants out, but if MB had made him a decent contract offer, instead of the reportedly $1.5M per year for the next 2 years (which he probably saw as insulting on top of being benched in the playoffs), then perhaps this would all be a non-issue.

Just throwing that out as a guess.

There's a long list of "if MB/Montreal didn't do this" to go around but either way $6.1m for one year is a lot so I get Kotkaniemi signing it

No question.

Kid is set for life now, no matter how his career turns out. Worse case, he goes back and plays professionally in Finland and makes a few bucks a year on top of it.

All win for KK.

Those close to Kotkaniemi predicted he had played 'last game' with Habs following playoff scratch

https://www.tsn.ca/jesper...lina-hurricanes-1.1687237

KK wants out of MTL, there is no freaking debate on that

- Mithos

meh, of course it's plausible, but I wouldn't be completely shocked if the habs matched and then KK said he's happy to stay after all. unless it comes directly from him or his agent these are all assumptions.
