about Timmins and drafting in general, I was wondering, do GMs across the league have veto power over their scouts and director of scouting when it comes to the draft? - Pat1993
they sure do, especially for the 1st pick. so they say.
Timmins got shafted a few times in his career. - Scabeh
this is what really interests me, what were his actual picks, and when did the GM decide to pick someone else, if both didn't always agree on things. Timmins has been with the habs for such a long time, holy (frank)...

The only ones I am aware of are 2006 (Gainey pushed for David Fischer while Timmins wanted Claude Giroux) and 2009 (Habs picked Leblanc, Timmins wanted Marcus Johansson).
Bottom line, even if we excuse him for these 2 failures, the rest are still on him.
I also give him full credit for the successful ones mind you.

Timmins barely ever talks to the media, which is probably why fans complain a lot more about Bergevin lol.. 18 years almost sounds unhealthy in today's NHL, guys are usually fired if things haven't worked out as planned after a while.

It is completely baffling that he's been here for that long.
Now of course, 3 more wins last year and he's a national hero...

just look up a few teams. look how many 70 pt players they've drafted over the past 18 years.
take Boston, of the top of my head, Bergeron, Marchand, Pastrnak. that 3 right there. and you cannot say they picked early!
take TB. take CAR. take any team and google draft history.

but still, the habs probably aren't among the absolute worse in the league in terms of drafting, and rather slightly above them, if that can somehow be any form of consolation.

I wonder if we go back through the drafts and just pick the best available player from the overall consensus. I wonder if the habs would be better served by not having scouts 🤣

Seriously, sometimes I'm thinking we'd have a better shot with Adam French and QP running the damn show with their web research and highlight videos.

the good news is that drafting is not the answer to everything. look at EDM and TOR. they missed the playoffs 10 years in a row, drafted top10 many many times, drafted good players. and still haven't won anything.
true that drafting well helps though, especially in a cap world. you need kids to come along every now and then to fill spots on a cheap contracts.

well to be fair, there have been a few serious hiccups here and there, no?
EDM has won 1 series in the last 15 years. TOR, 0. - fidopro
they probably wouldn't have gotten these results had they picked good players on a consistent basis... (well tbf TOR seem to have been suffering from the "we're a bunch of chokers" syndrome, while EDM have been suffering because of one bad hockey decision after another lol)
