It is common for fans to overstate the value of their own players. I believe this is why many fans cannot perceive the depth of the Flames defensive issues. These concerns are obvious when the defensive lineup is viewed from an impartial and analytic approach. Corsica Hockey is a publicly available analytical resource site. It can be utilized to illuminate the dearth of defensive talent. Here is how Corsica ranks each of the Flames defenders.
77 - R. Andersson - Jackie Daytona[2nd pair RD]
84 - N. Hanafin [2nd pair LD]
112 - J. Valimaki [3rd pair RD]
133 - N. Zadarov [3rd pair LD]
189 - C. Tanev [Depth D]
207 - O. Kylington [Fringe D]
No rank - C. Mackey [AHL D]
Based on this approach, most of the Flames defenders will be improperly slotted comparative to individual talent. This is extremely problematic when the team lacks either top pairing defender, and has an oft-injured depth defender playing top pairing minutes.
Fortunately for fans the Pacific Division is comically weak. This provides the Flames a good chance at making the playoffs despite this dilemma.
So a "depth D" would be a #7 dman, the spare body/healthy scratch dman who would be played likely on the 3rd D pair if one of the starting 6 dmen gets injured yeah??
If the answer is yes then according to Corsica Hockey Chris Tanev is a #7 dman? |

IDK if Sutter got half decent goal tending the Flames would have cruised into the playoffs
I would have traded Gio for Coleman and Zadorov easily
Markstrom bounce back makes all the difference |

Chris Tanev a depth D?
There definitely isn't a bonafide top pairing defenseman (hoping Hanifin becomes that) and Tanev may be slotted higher than he should but he's not a depth defenseman, unless my interpretation of depth defenseman is wrong. |

I think that Hanifin looked as good as he did because Tanev was beside him, just like he made Hughes look that much better in Van. Any analytics that project Tanev as a depth D option, and anyone who hops across sites pushing that data, are way off in my opinion. But what do I know, I don't have any fancy stats to present to back that up. |

I read that. He fills a need at right wing and is a natural goal scorer. Watched his video hilights, he's got a quick release and scores from everywhere. Could turn out to be a Brock Boeser type player.
I like Zary more probably cause I've had a chance to watch him here in K Town when the Blazers visit.
Regardless the Flames are starting to build a decent prospect pool although we really lack defence in that pool. Will be interesting to see how Stockton does this year. |

A thought occurred to me as I was reading this, and while I don't think Tre would ever turn down a slam dunk Dman in the draft, I wonder if there is an intentional strategy in place. Most Dmen take a little longer to develop and turn into a stable defender, and so I wonder if Tre and co are intentionally drafting more forwards right now thinking they can either hit UFA market for D or turn to a trade down the road like Hamilton/Hanifin where you convert that equity into a somewhat proven NHL asset.
Just a thought, not saying this is actually what's happening or a recommended strategy... |

Yeah saw that post from a guy that likes to go on all the threads & talk like an expert & then spews that garbage. The analytic stats actually showed Tanev & Hanafin pairing as the top unit in the league for awhile there. Its funny, people like to trash players for how they performed in the most recent year despite the previous years but now Corsica has Tanev at a replacement level D & ignore the incredible year he just had. One thing we can predict better than "Corsica" is that Flames usually follow a good year with a crap year & so this year coming up will probably be better than many think. |

I'm totally on board with the way this offseason has gone. I feel we have a better top 9 then fans are giving us credit for. Sure we don't have a true #1 center, but we got a pretty good #1 line and our 2nd and 3rd lines are both solid. Lots is going to hinge on how Monahan responds to hip surgery. I don't hold a lot of trust in all this crap that he's useless without McJohnny. He's proven to be a capable goal scorer before 13 even came to the Flames. We get some solid goaltending, guys like Valimaki, Mackay, Dube take another step, maybe we see Pelletier steal a spot, Gawdin makes the team, anything is possible.
Let's get this party started. |

Coleman is a completely different player than Brouwer, to compare them is idiotic. Zadorov does not replace Gio, no shît Sherlock, he was brought in to provide truculence to the team and play on the third line. Apples to oranges there. - Flamin_Irishmin
Yikes. Who peed in your cornflakes bud? haha. Coleman will be a fan favourite in Calg. He can really do it all, and jumps through the lineup with ease. He can be a pest with Tkachuk, or try and spark the inconsistent Gaudreau/Monohan line that seems to play without a pulse on some nights. People seem to think he is a bottom 6 player, but he has silky smooth hands and finds his way into the highlight reels every year. He will be a bigger factor than most calg fans realize. |
