You can't blame all of his deficiencies on poor coaching. He plays scared and looks absolutely lost as if he cant process the game fast enough.
He needs to progress steadily this year or he will never live up to that first overall status and to be honest he should be making a difference nightly regardless. No one talks about McDavid not being up to the task because of poor coaching or constant changes behind the bench.
Some of this is on the player when picked that high.. - scol354412
very true...but overall organizational dysfunction including a series of poor roster decisions, front office and coaching turnover and lack of a definitive direction certainly will hamper an 18 yr old's overall development |

Nice Hank, I like how you brought out the cards, wonder where his numbers in the Krueger Stank era with Borgen, thin k they made a decent pair in that short time. Dahlin needs that kind of partner |

I think taco and sbroads use a different site than evolvinghockey which allows the user to pick specific target dates within a season and analyze the results from that period. I'd be curious to know as well |

I think his skating is the one area that separates Hughes and Makar from Dahlin. Dahlin needs to feel the game and have confidence to try his dipsy doodles and crazy passes because he's not going to blow past people with his speed.
Dahlin was double clutching passes under Krueger and doubting himself which resulted in telegraphed passes that were then picked off. We didn't see that lack of confidence under Wowie Housley - Hank Balling
his skating is effortless and his edgework is sick...that said, it's a different game on north american ice and there's minimal time to make decisions...
r lph's attempt to synergize dahlin and defense at all costs was, well, pretty fruckin dumb |

Yes to the bold, but there's also the minor note that both Makar and Hughes play on better to much better teams. |

So the adage that defenseman take longer to develop doesn't apply to someone with the enormous talent of Dahlin? You're going to take him out of the context of playing in Buffalo at probably too young an age? This perspective isn't nuanced or capable of understanding that development is typically uneven. Using an outlier like McDavid will always lead to viewing most players as busts when, in fact, they are just rounding into a final product. |

So now that's the bar for Dahlin, be as good as McDavid. Good to know. |

Now? He was touted as the McDavid of defencemen before he was drafted you dumb sonofafemale dog. His fanboys on here try and justify him living up to that hype any time he makes a routine NHL defenceman play that usually doesn't result in a goal. |

Dan Marr - Director of NHL Central Scouting: "Dahlin has the skating, skills and elite hockey sense that can dictate the style of play and the pace of a game with or without the puck. He finds ways to contribute in all situations, is ultra-competitive and a high-character person who leads by example."
Adam Kimelman - NHL.com - April 30: "Dahlin is the unquestioned best player available in the 2018 draft class. His offensive instincts are first-rate, and at 6-foot-2, 181 pounds, he's not afraid to play physically if needed."
Mike Morreale - NHL.com - April 30: "The one player in the 2018 draft class who is considered a generational talent, because of his skating, puck-handling, vision and intelligence."
Craig Button - TSN - April 28: "Franchise defining blueliner who very well may be the best defenceman entering the draft since Denis Potvin in 1973."
Sam Cosentino - SportsNet - April 28: "He’s a one-man band and has essentially made this draft a 2-31 affair."
Steve Kournianos - SportingNews/The Draft Analys - April 28: "An electrifying defenseman with ankle-breaking moves, Dahlin is ready to show the NHL what he's made of. He's been called the Swedish Bobby Orr, but Dahlin's passing ability and puck control techniques are quite unique for a defender from any era."
Cam Robinson - DobberProspects - April 26: "Effortless skating mixed with size, smarts, and dangles that would make Pavel Datsyuk nod in approval. He’s the entire package and has all the tools to become a game-changing pillar for an organization."

OK, again, one guy mentioned that.
The key word here is "consensus". That's certainly not "consensus". |

If you look at Dahlin's points in the two years with Ralph. The first year he had 40 pts in 59 games. 21 of which were Even strengths and 19 which were PPP. He was a -7.
The second year with Ralph and Granato 23 pts, in 56 games. -39. 11 PPP and 12 Even Strength.
There was more than just the coach in his production or lack thereof last year. There was more than the system as is popularly stated by some on WGR in the morning and regurgitated. Lack of Jack didn't help produce points. He had Steve Smith in year one with Ralph and most of year two but perhaps development did not progress. The COVID two week off could have been an issue in year two There is player accountability in year two. He just didn't have a good year in his second COVID straight year. He got sick of losing and his playing showed it. His style of play and Ralph's style weren't conducive and his motivation waned. Who knows. |
