I was trying to read an article about Morgan Rielly and the Leafs but it was behind a paywall so I couldn't . It wasn't hard though to figure out what they were going to talk about. Have the Leafs backed themselves into a corner because of their top heavy contracts. Like most of you I don't really care but the reason I bring it up is are the Canucks going to be doing the same thing?
I am a big fan of the flat cap and hope it stays for another 7 or 8 years. I like the quality of players it leaves at free agency. It comes down to the same thing for every team , you can't afford everyone.
I am also a big fan of what Arizona are doing this year (yes I said it) . They have 8 picks in this next draft in the first two rounds. They will have 52 mil in cap space next year. I think they will go one more year compiling draft picks and taking short bad contracts . I think they will take a run at Connor Bedard and I have Matthews back home in two years.
I think if Canucks can lock Petey short term at 7 mil and Hughes around the same price then we will be in good shape . If they start getting in around 9 mil then my thinking changes gears and I would be open to the draft picks and 17 mil cap space . I know most wont agree but I like the roster already and maybe that is the difference.
Waiting now for the are you crazy onslaught . - VANTEL

Seriously though, taking out two star players, leaves this team in a worse position. They would end up with worse contracts in free agency for older, less productive players. |

I get that.
I obviously am not fully on board with Petey and Hughes as superstars yet. I think they are both very good players but I don't think they are quite at that level yet and that is why I push for a bridge deal all the time.
I think looking at other teams that have structured themselves for the next three years I am trying to figure out the best formula. Teams like Leafs Caps Hawks Knights are already dumping trying to get rid of good players . I don't see any of them winning the cup. Who knowa what the right answer is?

Morgan Rielly's signed for another year I think, so they're not in a situation yet, but they will be with their top heavy contracts if they don't move salary out next spring. I think it'll really depend on how they finish this season and how they do in the playoffs.
Everyone hates the Leafs outside of Ontario, including me, unless you're from there or you're old and you were a fan in the original six era, however, they are a good team, they've just been unable to get it done in the playoffs. Kinda like Washington for many years. They were really good but they just couldn't get past the second round, until they did.
I too like what Arizona's doing, they've never done this before, and I'm a huge fan of building your foundation through the draft by tanking so hopefully it works for them!! You know, since they arrived in Phoenix in 1996 they've only had four top five picks, Blake Wheeler #5/Kyle Turris #3/Dylan Strome #3/Barrett Hayton #5.....and Wheeler refused to play for them.
I think the Canucks have around 14 million in cap space with Ferland on LTIR, if EP40 wants 8 million and Quinn Hughes wants 6-7 million Benning has painted himself into a corner and you're probably going to see one or both of those kids sit out the start of training camp or the start of the regular season. |

Leafs have been dumping players and picks for at least two years now. Johnsson Kapanen Hyman a couple of firsts. They have 13 mil in space next year with 14 players under contract. They probably can't afford Rielly next year and more importantly I think their team is fading.
I think we have gone over this a few times Canucks have between 16-17 mil still once players have been sent down and LTIR. If Hughes got 7 and Petey got 8 that is okay . It is when you go above those numbers that you take away the flexibility of future years.

I would agree but am trying to be realistic of what he will get. He hasn't played enough games yet .

The media isnt covering the impressive young lady from Britain. That is all. She deserves credit. They got a bit carried away. Just saw it’s over. Fun while it lasted - CanuckDon

Hughes isn't anywhere close to being the player Makar is, maybe similar to Sam Girard. |

Daily cap savings will be lower this season
Puck Pedia: (thread) “This season is expected to be 200 days for cap calc purposes, as the Olympic Break (19 days) counts towards team’s cap calcs. This is longer than the usual 186 days & last year’s 116.
Some consequences:
Each day under the cap is worth less than last yr, meaning sending player down 1 day provides less benefit this yr (1/200) vs usual (1/186) or 20-21 (1/116) Ex: a $1M player sent down for 1 day is worth $24K of Annual Cap hit that can be added at deadline (41 days left in yr). Last Yr, $1M player sent down 1 day = $37K at deadline.
Expect non-LTIR teams to send players down to minors during Olympic break. A $1M player down for 19 days saves $95K Cap Hit, which is worth $463K Annual Cap Hit that can be added at trade deadline (assuming deadline is the usual 41 days from season end |
