Gotcha, thought both were from around there. Well throw out the whole close to home thing then. Although Buf is very much closer than LA. |

Thank you.
Hypothetically:
If the Sabres trade eichel with 20 games left in the Sabres season. The new team would take on roughly 25% of his remaining salary ( 20 games of 82. Dirty D.)
So team A would be on the hook for 2.5 and would need that much cap space . If we were holding (3 million per x 5)
So roughly 1.5ish would be owed to eichel for this season.
How does the cap hit / salary hit differ?
Is it a matter of the players contract , like quick for example?
Thank you in advance - Boss34
This trips up a lot of people and isn't terribly easy to explain. CapFriendly is amazing and everyone is used to their display of cap hits. It's more complex than that and the daily cap tracker is where the true complexity lies. The cap is a daily thing, whereas the main display shows it in annual terms.
Last season, Eichel cost roughly 86k per day. If you retain 30%, that goes down to 60k. Post deadline days x 60k is the bottom line here, but no one speaks in those numbers. Numbers will change a bit this season.
How much annualized cap space you need is a far different question. That's where deadline cap space comes into play. $ under the cap before the TDL increase that amount. If you've been at the cap all season, your annualized cap space = deadline cap space. You'd need 7m for Eichel. In all likelihood, you've accumulated some space during the season, so you need 7m of deadline cap space and less annualized cap space (and just enough real cap space).
Short answer, it's complicated and the easiest answer is 7m of deadline cap space. |

You and I have been on the same page regarding retaining salary on an Eichel trade, but I have an extremely difficult time seeing the Sabres actually doing that. - kingcong39
Because it's bonkers to even consider it.
Retaining salary is basically admitting that the asset (Eichel) isn't worth his current contract.

Or carry 3 goalies. Wouldn't be the first team to do it, and Quick will help with the cap. Not to mention, if he has a good attitude about it, just another mentor for UPL that's had success. - SDSabre
If you carry 3, it's usually because you have injury or waiver problems. In the Sabre's case, UPL is exempt and everyone else would clear.

At what point to you give a 2017 top goalie prospect a shot at the big club?
4 drafts have now pasted by since upl was selected.
He's not a kid, he's 22 years old.
Are you really worried about ruining a "prospect" , he needs to show something this season.
It was the "plan" last season , until he got hurt.
No worries of ruining him... - Boss34
doing a quick once-over on goalies in their mid to upper-20's right now
--1 hit the nhl full time at age 21: Carter Hart (PHI)
--4 hit the nhl full time at age 22: Mackenzie Blackwood (NJD), Ilya Samsonov (WSH), Matt Murray for PIT (now with OTT), Andrei Vasilevsky (TBL)
Those who were full-time at age 23
Thatcher Demko (VAN, 27gms)
Connor Hellebuyck (WPG, 56)
Alexander Georgiev (NYR, 34)
the success rate for each of these goalies varies, but most of the very successful ones played for good/great teams |

If the only way to get a return like Zegras and the Ducks 1st or Byfield and the Kings 1st is to retain say $2M or $3M per on Eichel, what do you do? |

If I'm not mistaken, both he and his wife are from the area. Just saying, if this is the thought process, no one would ever come to Buffalo. Definitely would have to gauge whether he'd be interested in this sort of arrangement, but wouldn't be the craziest scenario to happen. - SDSabre
Um, guy's rarely sign in buffalo, unless they are overpaid, grew up nearby or both (irrelevant skimmer)
Last stop cafe....
It's only gets worse which each failed experience and losing season that passes.
Surely Staal and hall will not be giving friends their blessing on Buffalo.
Do you guys really like leaving a good franchise in a warm climate on a decent team to join a team destined to lose? Just to teach the youngsters..... or for grandparents babysitting the kids ....
Who wants to finish a solid career ...
. In buffalo..
Show up and be a positive influence.

Personally I think if you are the Kings or Ducks and the sticking point in trading an elite prospect for an elite NHL player is 2-3 mil in salary cap, you need your head examined.
He hasn't been traded because the Sabres and Eichel's camp fumbled the injury issue.
IMO retaining a penny of his contract for 5 years is a fireable offense |

It was in response to whether he would want to play in buffalo.
If they didn't have 4 kids and if she didn't care where they lived it would be a total non factor and not worth mentioning. She doesn't take poop.

I agree with the bold, but doesn't it seem apparent that the reason Adams has not traded Eichel yet because that kind of return is not being offered yet? |

maybe. or maybe the medical situation is still unresolved. or compensation isn't where it needs to be. or a mix of the two. no one actually knows.
