But the team we have now doesn't seem to be mediocre.
Some pretty decent wingers, possibly above avg PP.
Yes we could use a 2C and a 1D but meh...
The game is played on the ice and not on paper so anything can happen.
I'd rather have hope than go into an 82 game season thinking "yeah but we could draft top 5"

Fair enough.

But I do not think they are a lock for the playoffs.

I'd rather go into an 82 game season feeling like a lock for a playoff spot is pretty much there and a realistic cup win is more than just a long-shot possibility.

It has nothing to do with a a top 5 pick, but knowing there is a plan in place to achieve the above, rather than hoping (if everything goes right and we get some good bounces) maybe we could possibly be in the playoffs year after year.

So I get what you are saying, but I would be OK with losing for a bit (as they are likely to do most years anyways, as they have pretty much done for the last 30 years) to eventually build something that can contend for 5-6-7 years.

Will chalk it down to differences in expectations for the team and how people enjoy the season.

I agree with you but I'd rather squeak into the POs and think anything is possible than dominate the season and fear the 1st rd

Sure.

You could be Toronto.

But you could also be the Lightning.

TB will still be a very dangerous team, perhaps less dominant (I hope so lol) but they haven't really lost any core players

Yeah, sure.

Every team with success eventually does and add an expansion draft on top of that.

But are they a much better team than the Habs still?

Are they still a top 5 team in the league?

Are they pretty much a lock to make the playoffs?

Are they still a legitimate Stanley cup contender?

Regardless, still seems pretty damn exciting to be a Lightning fan this year, dare I say, more so than being a Habs fan.

Just pointing out that having a team that took a few years to rebuild and is a legitimate contender is, to me, a lot more fun to be a fan of than one that lives in mediocrity for decades with the occasional year of some success.

Which really, sums up our different views.

Yes but when you're in a market where nobody cares if you tank and can build with 1st rd picks it's all good and then you can reap the rewards.
Werent they selling 4 tickets plus parking plus hotdogs and drinks for not a whole lot recently?
Tanking in MTL would not go unnoticed and heads would roll. Not sure I want to be that GM.
