That's a loaded and wildly reaching statement. - Monkeypunk
You could say that about many of those statements about the Montréal Canadiens. |

Tears? Wtf are you on?
Losing John Tavares in the first few minutes of Game 1 hurt our chances. We lost an elite C and had MTL on the ropes but couldn't finish. - mjones242
You're crying, you just proved my point, ancient history. If, if, if, if, you got it this year though, right ? |

I just keep hearing the memes about Willie being afraid to play physical, being horrible defensively, and being a selfish player and it makes me laugh.
He's a league leader in close range goals, he's a career positive in TK/GV who doesn't seem to turtle in the post-season, and his goals/assists ratio doesn't look like a Cy Young W-L stat line.
But he held out for 6.9M+ and had a hard time finding his groove 3 years ago so he's a perpetual scourge with flowing blonde hair. (frank) him! - mjones242
He has improved for sure.
But to think he "ramped" it up defensively doesn't seem correct.
Hes gotten better, sure but lets not kid ourselves
He also held out for 7.5 per. Its only 6.9 cap hit because he sat out half a season.
But as ive said so many times on here. 6.9 or 7.5...if he scores 65 -75pts. Salary is fine. |

I’m firmly convinced that even though people won’t admit it, the Nylander haters simply loathe him for sitting out.
he’s worth that too imo… take a look at the players in roughly the same zone:
https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/contracts/
Ps: hit avg to get the yearly cost, and I know you’re one of the fans who are pro-Nylander as well - Dozzer
I could not agree more.
I'm definitely pro-Willie and while I may be overly harsh on Mitch, I'm actually just practicing tough love on #16. He reads these forums and is definitely going to try harder this post-season just to spite my vitriol. |

Tavares has made a career of turning average players into stars
Why waste Nylander there?
Let him turn Bunting and Kase into 25 goal scorers👍
Then unable to resign 🤨 - mr.sir
I like willie and jt together.
No sense in making jt having to carry buntin and kase.
Willie would be wasted on the 3rd line, i dont see him getting 60pts there |

He ramped up his compete level this past playoff. Again, I'm not saying his defence is "elite", but there's no way he dogged it defensively at all this past post-season.
He's not Patrice Bergeron but it seems like he's going to get poop on until he somehow becomes that type of player. As if he ever needs to be on that level.
His AAV is 6.9M so who gives a (frank) about his actual take home salary? The only thing that matters is the cap hit. |

IMHO
For a couple of years Marner used to work hard all the time while Willie floated much of the time. Marner was and is intelligent on defense. Willie was clueless on defense.
Last year and a half Marner seems to float more than before. Willie worked pretty hard getting back on D, but still makes defensive mental mistakes. Hopefully now that he appears to be more committed to D, his defensive IQ continues to improve.
As for toughness both use skill to take pucks away, but Willie definitely takes more hits. So if you hate one because “they are soft”, you should hate both. - jribout
Yeah I 100% agree with all of this.
What I watched last season says it's a lot closer than people on here are still making it out to be, I'm dying to see some hard stars to confirm I'm right or wrong either way. |

The cap hit is actually $6,962,366
He’s closer to $7 million than $6.9 |

Had he not sat out, his cap could be 7.5. Willie haters would hate even more.
In hindsight, its too bad marner didnt sit to lower his cap hit.

I was so adamant that obtaining him in a cap dump was genius. I still believe in the player, but be prepared to just never see him again. |
