He's actually really good at it. - Zezel
He’s actually not, bud..
He just stands there wave his stick around. It’s hard to get the puck back when you’re to scared to make physical contact with anyone. |

Why must he carry/drive the line? Can he be a secondary for the line he's on? Players will not give him too much attention to let him rip his shots up high and sometimes miss the net.
He will get his chances. - dmnted
Because he gets paid to.
He makes a LOT of $. He’s essentially a 30/30 player who’s subpar defensively. He’s JVR. |

If Willy is worth $7M, he should be able to drive a line and get his pts on the PP. |

hey, how bout those Rangers eh
always nice to beat the big, bad B's - 21peter
Man, I love what the Rangers have done.
They’re in the group of teams I watch most.
Most watched is Boston, Rangers, Leafs, Carolina, Tampa, Edmonton, Florida, and the Stars.
Edit:Colorado, of course. |

He has improved for sure.
But to think he "ramped" it up defensively doesn't seem correct.
Hes gotten better, sure but lets not kid ourselves
He also held out for 7.5 per. Its only 6.9 cap hit because he sat out half a season.
But as ive said so many times on here. 6.9 or 7.5...if he scores 65 -75pts. Salary is fine. - Fakepartofme
How come none of you think that might've been an actual strategy by Dubas and Nylander's team.
Maybe he sat out that time so he could get $7.5 and the Leafs would get to keep an extra $600k off of the Cap?!?!
At the time Dubas didn't know about Covid but he knew he had to save as much as possible for M&M and he had signed Tavares.
Nobody wins the Cup in Oct/Nov and Willie was on the ice in December.
Could've been a strategy all along. |

We’ll, they’re not going to have the puck the entire time. Willy is terrible in the D zone trying to get the puck back. - Arctic_AARDVARK
I'm no stats guy but I do recall seeing Willy doing just fine retrieving puck from other players in the D-zone
New season to review/critique his play |

Rangers, Leafs, Oils, Tampa, Boston for me. And will watch Detroit when they good again in 2-4 years.
Edit: looks like I forgot Avs too - Mac has always been a favourite. |

He’ll get far fewer minutes against the other top lines.
Let him show he can carry a line, and be defensively responsible. My guess is that if he tries to do that, his offence will suffer as a result. Then we’ll see what his true value is. - Arctic_AARDVARK
So other top teams will not try to match up their best scoring lines against a third line with a supposedly terrible defensive player on it? |

Just 'cos you mentioned it, I threw it into my calculator.
Marner's cap hit would have lowered from $10.9m to $10.4m, but his first year cap hit would have been $14.4m! - Monkeypunk

This means that Marner should drive his own line and a half?! That's zany.
But okay.
Mikheyev - Kampf - Marner for the 3rd line it is.
See? Silliness.
Don't let hate blind you. Willy is a top-6 forward. |

Marner has already proven it. He carried Bozak and JVR his first year.
Willy is nowhere near the complete player Marner is. And he never will be.
Sure Willy can score like a top six fwd, but he doesn’t defend like one. |

Good. Then Willy should be in a top-6 role supported by other players since he's paid for his production and Marner can go support the third line since he's such a complete player who can carry an entire line.
Good talk. |

Third line minutes + PK + PP still gets him close to 20 min/g. Plus turns a couple of 15 goal guys into 30 goal guys and shuts down other team’s top lines. |
